Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi, my name is Julie Ann and i'm 31 and have been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic about 1 week now. It was a big shock and i'm still having trouble coming to terms with it.

When I was pregnant 3 years ago having my son I did get gestational diabetes but it went and I was border line after 12 months so I guess I should have thoght then that it might come back plus my dad is diabetic to type 1 on insulin so i've always been around it but still find it hard now its me.

I am young to get type 2 so the doctors tell me and it scares me to think that if i've got this early in life what else is round the corner for me and it frightens me to think what it going to happen now that I have it.

I just thought chatting to others maybe also being the same age if you have had the same thoughts and feelings as I have.

look forward to chatting xx🙂

Welcome to the forum Julie Ann.

It can be a bit of a shock to the system when first diagnosed. Have a look around the forum and maybe at the stickies at the top of the newbies section.

Anyway, are you on any form of medication yet or are you able to control it through diet and exercise alone?

Andy 🙂

Hi and welcome to the forum Julie Anne

Welcome Julie Ann................

Were all in the same boat and here to help, with the exception of a few, diabetics lead long and healthy lives.............

thanks I think this is going to be good for me. My friends and family are a great support but talking to people going through the same thing (although my dad is diabetic too) it does help.

Unfortunately I had to go straight on to medication - i'm taking metformin only taking one a day but due to take two a day as from tomorrow and then increase them slowly. Having symptoms on them like light heads tingling but I think this is normal.

Thanks steffie,

looking forward to getting to know people and having support

Hi Julieann. Welcome. Talking about it certainly takes some of the sting out of it all.

Hi Julie Ann,

I started to write a 'hello' to you earlier in my lunch break and it must have been a bit of a borring epic because I ran out of time and had to ditch it!

In short (not likely 😉, welcome to the forum. Its hard with a new diagnosis to adjust, but I hope you will start to feel at home with us, even if its something that right now you dont really want to have to get used to. Please post and reap the support, I never had online support when I was diagnosed and I really wish I had. People here really feel what you are going through.

I read your initial post and felt a connection- strangely we are very similar. I was 28 when I was diagnosed, also I was diagnosed as a Type 2 Diabetic. I was (and regretably still am!) overweight and have that and other risk factors that might have contributed to a T2 diagnosis at that time. My father also has Type 1 Diabetes, like yours.....my doctor was unsure which I was, leaning in favour of T2, feeling that I was quite late in life to develop T1. Treatment didnt go well for me and some time later an antibody blood test confirmed I was T1.

But please dont take from that that I am suggested you have also been mis-diagnosed! Just my story. What has your dads reaction been if you dont mind me asking? Can be difficult. Even now I cant really discuss it with my dad and I can tell he feels guilty.

Anyway, Ive gone off on a tangent again 🙄

Welcome,

Louisa x *shuts up so someone else can post* 🙂

Hi sugarbum,

How strange that we're so alike. Its quite nice (in a weird way) to realise that you're not the only one and there is people out there in the same situation and feeling the same as I do.

How long ago was it that you were diagnosed and then since you have been type 1?

Both my Mom and Dad were shocked, however my Dad has been very supportive as he has been through it he understands how I feel. I don't think he feels guilty as I did also get gestational diabetes during my pregancy 3 years ago so it could have been due to that and also my grandad had it so its in the family but i wouldn't blame him its just the way our bloods are.

It helps being around diabetes for some time and also having during my pregnancy and having to inject insulin I do have a insite into diabetes.

Its just trying to get my head round it that i'm stuck with it this time and i'll be on medication for the rest of my life which I never thought would happen. Also adapting my diet I have been cutting down as i'm too overweight. I have a least 2 stone to loose to be in the 'healthy' or at least to overweight category rather than the obese category but its hard as I do love my food - doesn't everyone!!

Have you any tips on your eating that you could suggest that works for you?

Looking forward to continuing our chat.

I'll just quickly pop in here.

When I was diagnosed last October, my BMI was 32.5 and that was after I'd already lost atleast a stone because of my insulin resistance.

I was initially put on to gliclazide to get the levels under control and then this was switched to metformin.

I think that I had been waiting for a kick like this, because I changed my diet and exercise levels around completely.

As a consequence, my BMI is now 27.2 and I am actually off the metformin too. I am just diet and exercise controlled. My last HbA1c was 5.9, so it is looking good so far.

I'm not saying that it will be the same for you too, but it is possible.

Also, it may not be a good thing to have stopped taking the metformin because it has other beneficial protective effects (statistically). That was simply a personal choice that I have made.

Andy 🙂
