Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I'm 18 years old and been diagnosed with type 1 since January 2015. Shortly after, I found out I was pregnant (April 2015) I gave birth to my baby boy in November 2015 (19 days early due to being induced) who weighed 10lbs3oz. 8 months later and my diabetes is still out of control. Any advice would be great
Thank you

Hi Type1mommy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Congratulations on the birth of your son! How were things for you during the pregnancy? What insulin regime are you on? I imagine your head must have been spinning for much of last year, and now you must be very busy with your little one to look after - hope you are managing OK! 🙂

I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - it's not cheap, but it is the best book available on Type 1 and covers every aspect of living with it.

Do you have any specific problems with your control? Have you been on a course for your diabetes, such as DAFNE? If not, I would highly recommend asking about going on one.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will be happy to help 🙂

Thank you! Pregnancy wasn't too bad apart from several episodes of reduced movement, a few light bleeds and uti's every month! Labour and birth was the tough part; was connected to the blood pressure cuff as my BP was high, insulin drip, antibiotics, anti sickness(which didn't work) and a heavy bleed resulting in 2 blood transfusions. Took me a while to get over it so for that time, I barely ate which messed things up a little. Ive lost 3&a half stone of my pre pregnancy weight
I take novo rapid with meals and levemir every 24hours.
The problem I'm having is hyperglycaemia and ketones. My levels are on average about 23-25mmol but often touching over 33.3mmol and my ketone urine sticks are almost black. Apart from tiredness (even though I get 12 hours sleep a night), excessive thirst and very frequent urination, I don't have any other typical symptoms which confuses me. I take my insulin religiously and keep increasing my doses but I can't seem to settle them. Occasionally I get hypos as well which I can't understand how my blood sugar levels go from one extreme to another

Surely you don't think that tiredness, excessive thirst and very frequent urination are normal?!? I really hope you will get the help you need to improve your situation.

Umm...those ARE the typical symptoms. You've tiredness, thirst, toilet and given you've lost more than three stone, you've also got thinner.

I'm not sure why you're confused - you have the full house. Please get yourself to a hospital. I know it's been said elsewhere, and this is an awful thing to say to anyone (let alone a young mum) but you are genuinely at death's door and yet it can be fixed quickly and easily with professional help.

hello and welcome type1mommy.
just to echo what everyone else has said - these are typical symptoms of hyperglycaemia. the best thing you can do for yourself (and your little one) is to get some medical help urgently to help sort things out.
wishing you the best of luck x

Sounds like I was just before I was admitted to hospital. The sooner you get it sorted the less time you'll have away from your family. Better to go in as walking wounded than in an ambulance.

Thank you all for your advice. I went to a&e and was seen within seconds of my arrival. Long story short, it could've been so much worse if I'd have left it just that little bit longer. Thank you again to everyone that helped

Welcome to the forum. How are you now?
