Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
:confused:Hi. I am 36 and have just been told I am more than likely diabetic. I've had two 12 hour fasting tests both 7.7 and 7.9, then a glucose intolerance test today andafter 2 hours it was 13.5. (I checked on an Accu-check when I got home) I will find out officially on Monday when the blood results come back. My level was 9.6 after my tea tonight. My mam and all her siblings are diabetic. My symptoms are tiredness, shaky and don't know if it is connected but I feel hot all the time. Any advice for a newbie please? Thanks x

Hi Keltie and welcome to the club, although I'm sorry you've had to join it. It does sound as though you probably are Type 2 I'm afraid. I was diagnosed in 2003 although I only joined this site in March of this year. It can be very scary to start with, but my advice would be to take it one step at a time. There's lots to learn and changes to be made but if you're determined and sensible most of the time you will get there.

You've made a good start by coming on here as you will get all the help and support you need. Have a look around and ask any questions you have. Nothing is considered silly as we all only know what we know. Good luck with it and take care. XXXXX

Hi Keltie.

I am newly diagnosed (March) and glad of the support here. Its possible to grab hold of this diagnosis and work towards controlling it yourself.

Hi keltie, welcome to the forum 🙂 As has been said, it does look as though you have diabetes with results like that, but try not to think the worst - although a diagnosis of diabetes is something no-one wants it can be a turning point for many people, and if you make the appropriate adaptations to your diet and activity levels it's more than possible that you will become fitter and healthier than you have felt for a long time.

There is a lot of good reading in our Useful links thread, and I would particularly recommend getting hold of a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - many of our Type 2 members have found it a tremendous help in these early days (and beyond!).

The good news is that diabetes can be managed successfully with a bit of hard work and lots of help and support, so please feel free to ask anything that may be confusing or concerning you and we will do our best to help you out 🙂

Hi Keltie and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forums Keltie 🙂

Unfortunately when you have a strong genetic connection it's a bit difficult to dodge. I was also diagnosed at the age of 36 with at least a couple of generation of diabetics in the family.

Hi Keltie. Welcome. 🙂

Wish we could think of something else trivial that it could be, but I'm sure you know for certain.

At least you might be able to dispel a few myths and annoy the rest of your diabetic family members with your newly gained knowledge from here.🙂

Rob

Hi keltie and welcome, I am also newly diagnosed June, out of the blue aged 42 and no family history, it's really hard to get your head round but lots of good advice on here x

Welcome to the forum Keltie 🙂

Welcome to the forum Keltie. I found reading books (mostly from the library) really helped me settle and calm down. Once you start reading the same info again but in another book, it is a breakthrough as you know that bit.

I am also from a mostly diabetic family but still did not know very much about it until I started reading about it for myself.

This forum is brilliant.

Welcome to the forum Keltie 🙂

I found out about 3 months ago, I was scared and very worried at first, I was bad enough to have all kinds of symptoms which had crept up over recent longish period. After the shock and initial upset I can truthfully say I feel much much better in myself even in a short time just on a dietary regime...and now that I am regularly testing and seeing that I do respond to diet I feel very much more optimistic. Of course I do have times when I am upset about being diabetic, it is early days and it does mean a life of care and vigilance with food but I have lost weight, fit my clothes better and feel full of energy, better than for some long time. I felt better once I started full regular blood tests and could begin to see what and when affected my blood the most rather than just hoping for the best on a generally "healthier" diet. This forum is excellent and source of much useful help and support.

welcome to the forum Keltie 🙂 ,as mark pointed out if you have a gentic connection and high sugars it seems quite likely that you probably have diabetes , my dad ,nan and niece are all diabetic , you will gets lots of helpful advice on here .

Confirmed

Hi everyone. Thank you all so much for the warm welcome! My doctor has confirmed today that I am diabetic. In fact my second glucose intolerance after 2 hours was 15.2. Hopefully once I get the right treatment/advice in place I can feel better.
