Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I'm new to this site so bear with me.
Just been diagnosed type2 diabetic (broadline) which was shocking from my GP tonight even though i don't take sugar or salt!
I'm married, 4 kids, aged 45, asthmatic and suffer arthritis and come from the West Midlands.
I have tried so many attempts to shift the pounds for years but since having 2 surgeries on my foot making me less active etc
Trying to sort food wise and hate my weight as I love to be slim again but as we get older I'm sure u all in the same that our bodies changes and it's harder to shift the pounds as I should know myself....... it's me more generally about weight wise no matter what I do its not shifting xx

Hi @Gizmeabreak73 , Welcome to the club no one wants to be in ever, but your in it ...as a type 2 our bodies aren’t able to handle carbohydrates , that’s both the simple sugars as found in cakes, biscuits , anything sweet etc but also the more complex starches , so that’s any thing from wheat, rice, grains, pulses etc etc, which our bodies rapidly change into sugar..
So bread, pasta, rice, keep them to a minimum, use the wholewheat version if you can, it needs a kind of turnaround thoughts about food..most here advise what’s called a low carb, higher healthy fat diet LCHF ,
so.. despite normal advice weetabix are full of Carbs, whereas Bacon & Eggs are better for us Diabetics..
It’s better to lose weight to help with your condition if you can..
I hope @Northerner can give more advice...

Hi , welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place for info and cyber support. Firstly their is a lot of misinformation out there. Their are foods that are considered healthy but aren’t for us.
Diabetes is not really about sugar , it’s carbohydrates as @Martin9 has said ,sugar is just another carbohydrate.

Here is a brief list Just to get you started on what is usually fine for us to eat.
If you eat meat, all meat is fine including high meat content sausages and burgers, berries (grapes are not berries) cheese, eggs cooked anyway you like, milk butter cream, some nuts are low in carbohydrates, leafy green veg , mushrooms. Honestly their is loads more.

The ones we often need to cut down on and or find nice substitutes for are
Potatoes esp mashed, rice, pasta, bread esp white, things made with flour, sugar, fruit juice is jam packed full of fructose (a fruit sugar as are grapes , we call them little sugar bombs on here) and many fruits that originated in hot climates , breakfast cereals.

Some people are ok with wholemeal versions but some are not.
Many on here buy Burgen Soya and linseed bread or a high protein bread,
New potatoes are often better than mashed , some people find they are fine with sweet potatoes.
You can make or buy, cauli or broccoli rice. But the only way you really know what your body can and can’t tolerate anymore is by self testing.

Their is an awful lot of info in this link, so find some quite time, make yourself a cuppa

maggie-daveys-letter-to-newly-diagnosed-type-2s.

If you decide you wish to self test and your practice say no , which is often the case
The SD Codefree glucose meter is one of the cheapest ones we know to self fund the ongoing cost of the testing strips
You will need to buy more test strips their is 50 in a box and you test just before eating then two hrs after starting to eat. and one box of lancets
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Codefree-G...fm-21&linkId=f39210144fdc26c27738e45b6d957003

Ask all the questions you need to. Getting a diagnosis of diabetes is a shock and can be frightening however with the right info @nd a bit of work from yourself, diabetes is a condition that can be well managed.
