hi everyone, my name is tracey an ive just been told today that i have diabetes, i dont know what type yet. i got a blood test done last week an it came back 9.1 so had to get retested yesterday an this one came back 10.4, im not sure what all this means. i have an appointment on monday morning with the nurse to find out more. also they told me i am anemic, something about my b12 an have to have insulin once a week for 4 weeks then once every 3 months, does this have something to do with being diabetic? its all been a big shock an im finding it all very hard to understand an take it all in. sorry if ive wrote this in wrong place.

hi tracey you are not in the wrong place ..it must be very confused at the moment main thing is dont panic...have a look around the forum and remember no questions are silly here....it will become clearer... there is lots of advice and support here x

thanks am64 for the welcome. im having a look through the forum an trying to understand about what diabetes means an what to expect, im finding it realy helpful🙂

also they told me i am anaemic, something about my b12 an have to have insulin once a week for 4 weeks then once every 3 months, does this have something to do with being diabetic?

Hi Tracey and welcome. I think it is the B12 injection you will be having weekly to start with, not insulin.
Do you have women's problems? I needed a blood transfusion a few years back when it was discovered I had a fibroid in my womb. I used to bleed quite heavily and this caused me to be anaemic.
Ask the nurse for as much info as possible when you see him/her.
Also write things down so you check things out later on. Maybe take a friend or partner with you.

your welcome ...its always tough when dx... i just cried.... but found this place about 6 months ago and found the support tremendous...we've had a good number of newbies recently check out their threads aswell, as i found just to not feel alone was a great starting point x🙂

Hi traceycat, and welcome!
It can be scary getting a diagnosis of diabetes. However, I think we are all testamount to the fact that we can do well and have a normal life with this condition.
Glad you're seeing the nurse again on Monday and you should be able to take in more info by then. The shock of diagnosis blocked out for me anything the doctor said. The regime you have mentioned sounds like a B12 injection regime. Its unlikely your diabeties medication would follow this path. Usually, if you are type 2, you will be prescribed medication and/ or diet & exercise. If type 1 you will be prescribed insulin, which would entail (usually) 3 rapid acting injections to be taken with meals and 1 long acting insulin once a day or mixed insulin wich is usually injections x twice daily.
I would suggest you write up a list of questions for the nurse next week, and of course if you have anything in the meantime, dont hesitate to ask them on here.

thanks everyone for the friendly welcomes, finding this site this evening has cheered me up after the horrible day ive had (cried for hours when i was told today) still cant belive it even though i had a feeling i could be as my mum had it. i only found out because i went to doctors last week because ive been having numbness an tingling in my feet for bout 7 years an it got realy bad that i couldnt put up with it anymore (im gonna ask about this again on monday) regarding the insuline i mentioned for the anemia, thanks for the advice on that aswel, yes it was b12 injections they said id be having not insuline, i got that mixed up, i dont have womans problems so realy dont know why i have aneamia but ill ask this also when i see the nurse. 🙂

Hi Traceycat, welcome to the forfum.

A B12 deficiency will often result in anaemia. My dad had a condition called pernicious anaemia (don't worry about the name - not as bad as it sounds). His body couldn't process vitamin B12 so he had to have injections every three months and other supplements. He was fine though once it was treated and his blood recovered.

See this link http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/facts/anaemiab12.htm

Looking at the symptoms - I see it also can cause tingling in the feet!

hi annamay, thanks for the link. it was realy helpful 🙂

Another thing, ask about getting on to a Diabetes X-Pert course. It consists of 1 afternoon per week for 6 weeks and will give you a gound grounding in what diabetes is and what you need to do. The NHS runs it and I was lucky enough to get on one within a month of diagnosis. I found it really useful when used in conjunction with other information that I've picked up here and on other forums.

Good luck! 🙂

Hi Tracey, welcome to the forum.

Hi Tracey,

Yeah, getting diagnosed with diabetes is horrible. I also cried alot when it first happened to me, but it does get easier, eventually. I look back and think "gosh, i really didn't think i could cope with this, but i have." and hopefully you (and everybody else who's ever been in the same situation) will feel the same way too.
I don't know much about anaemia, i think i might get it from time to time, but it's transient, and my doctor hasn't mentioned it yet, and he's normally pretty good about telling me i need new medication, worst luck.

Hi Traceycat welcome i'm a newbie too, everyone is helpful and friendly. I know it must be scary for you, your brain has to cope with a lot of things , it will get better in time to understand the condition, never be scared to ask a question if the nurse or doc is getting a bit technical. Good luck and take care. Sheena
