Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
So I've been a diabetic for a good 19 years, I'm now 21. I think I'm experiencing diabetic burnout, my bloods don't seem to stay stable no matter what I'm doing. They are high most mornings and I struggle to sleep as it is. There are times I'm all for monitoring and controlling it and other times where I just don't have the motivation anymore. And ever since lockdown, I'm starting to reach the end of my rope. I'll try and see a professional again but always needing to monitor my own life is a dilemma I can't seem to budge anymore, I'm so tired of this condition. I take lantus and novorapid and feel fatigued and hungry most of the time, plus insomnia. Any suggestions?

Hello @Socio45
These are certainly difficult times to cope with for many people. and the added stresses of living with Diabetes adds a lot to the difficulties.
Do you have family and friends that you can share your situation with? Sometimes just talking to someone about things helps.

Hi Socio45, Welcome to the forum!

Really sorry to hear that you're feeling burnt out. Living with diabetes can be very challenging at times, especially when you've been dealing with it from a young age.

Do you have a doctor or nurse you can talk to about how you're feeling? I ask as it sounds as though you could do with some support to get back on track. I know many who have type one find the Libre device useful so they are not having to constantly prick their fingers, is this something you could look into?

One of the things we don't always connect with our readings is our stress levels. Have a chat with you GP and give the helpline a call so that you can offload some of your concerns and get support with finding a pathway that works for you.

As always, we're always here to help so feel free to use the forum for additional support.

Well - I agree with @Alannah - concentrate on ONE thing at a time.

I've said this on here quite recently - when we need to eat a whole elephant (eating an elephant = anything enormous, so big that we don't know how to tackle it) first, divide your elephant up into bite sized pieces, because only by doing that are we likely to successfully complete the task.

Are you getting enough physical activity day to day, getting enough air into your lungs, looking at something different than your abode, drinking enough water?

Are you actually looking after yourself properly? - when I am, I have found that my D ceases to be approximately 95% problematic.

Have a good think about that last part, please.

Welcome to the forum @Socio45 . I am glad that you have found us.
There are times when manageing our Diabetes seems so much harder, and the lockdown has not helped. The stress means that levels don’t behave as you expect.

I ended up with burn-out a while ago. It took me time to ask for help. Counselling and support from people on here got me through it.

I know that you have been diagnosed for many years, but things have changed so much over recent years. So I am wondering whether
- you have done a course in carb counting,
- You have been offered a Libre
Both of these made a big difference to my control.

Hello and welcome to the forum @Socio45 🙂 I hope you will find some answers on here.

Hi and welcome
sorry to hear you are feeling a bit naff.

I would just echo the suggestions above about one thing at a time and getting out in the fresh air regularly.

I personally feel permanently fed up with this condition, but apart from confronting it and not letting it beat me, there is nothing else I can do about it.
But after my own diagnosis I developed a mentality of not letting anything beat me, and so here I am, retiring after a very successful career, with a wealth of different experiences behind me, and all because I kept saying to myself, of course I can do that, I am not going to let that beat me.
And tbqh my own diabetes control is very far from perfect, but I don’t stress about it too much. (Well, perhaps today I’ll stress because I have my clinic appointment this afternoon and they’ll tell me off again. I know that because they always do, and always have done)
