Hi I'm new on here I was diagnosed pre diabetes by letter on Saturday ,I would really appreciate some advice on meals etc ,p.s hope you're all well
 
Hi Martin , thank you so much for replying ,it seems like a minefield what to or not to eat ,I'm a heart attack victim to so have to watch cholesterol ,I'm having un cooked porridge oats and oat milk in mornings ,I can only think fish, chicken or turkey salad ,that's my complete idea of menu I'm no Jamie Oliver and live alone, I'm scared to be honest , thanks so much for replying that alone made me feel a bit better,
 
My hba1c says 42 to 47 and my fasting plasma glucose says 5.5 to 6.9 which I'm confused about as It doesn't give a Pacific number

The foods which are the ones to avoid, those with high starch and sugar are not all that difficult to substitute or avoid.
The cauliflower cheese I devised is a hit with many, yet it is a base of almost cooked cauliflower, steamed and then placed in a warm dish, covered in cream cheese and sprinkled with herbs or paprika, then covered in grated Red Leicester - other cheeses are available, and some bolder souls then add a crumbling of blue cheese for extra impact. The dish is then replaced in a warm oven until the cheese acquires a delicate golden tan.
I make pancakes from an egg and a blob of mozzarella cheese, blended together and mixed with a little psyllium husk and cream, then cooked as small pancakes so they can be flipped using a fish slice as they are rather tender, then served with lemon juice and granular sweetener.
I make curries as usual but serve them on chopped cauliflower - or once, finding there was none in the freezer, used green beans instead. I make stews and serve them with mashed swede, steak with stirfry and a side salad, chicken with mushrooms, sweet pepper and asparagus - all good simple cooking using ingredients which are low carb. I set my limit for choosing to eat a food at 10 percent carbs, other than the 95 percent cocoa chocolate, but I have just one square, and not every day.
 
Hi drummer, thank you so much for your advice and taking the time to do so, there's some good ideas in there ,I especially like the sound of curry on Cauliflower , unfortunately I have to be careful with eggs and cheese because of cholesterol as IV had heart attacks to ,I appreciate your advice very much thanks again, kind regards iggy

No problem - and I understand your caution over eggs and cheese - however I spent almost 2 years avoiding saturated fats before diagnosis - I was almost spherical by then on the high carb diet.
In the 6 months after diagnosis eating a low carb diet with loads of meat fish eggs cheese full fat yoghurts - my cholesterol and my weight both went down. I was badly affected by the Metformin and Atorvastatin I was prescribed and managed to take for 5 weeks, but by 6 months I had become involved in morris dancing, and Maypole.
 
That's fantastic , sounds like you've got great control with everything ,well done you ,an inspiration for us newbies. It really helps to talk to people with personal knowledge thanks again and keep well

Hope you can find a way to balance the advice you’ve had for eating to support your heart health, and eating to manage your BG levels.

I wonder if it might help swapping carby carbs(!) for lower carb versions, and reducing portion sizes elsewhere can be a very powerful BG management tactic, perhaps as part of a mediterranean style food plan, with some good fats (eg those high in monounsaturates)?
 
Hi , thank you for your message, yes hopefully it's something I can learn more about as time goes , it's certainly something I need to learn I appreciate your message as I do the other kind people who have messaged me today ,I'm so glad I joined the forum I don't feel alone as much which is a big plus, I feel less anxious than I have been since receiving the doctors letter on Saturday, so thanks so much all of you kind regards iggy
