Hi,good to meet you I am a 69 year old grandmother to 6 grandkids - all girls!
For the last four years I have had some health problems, including a stroke Nov 2013,and an emergency hysterectomy Nov 2015.Each event happened one week before scheduled knee replacement operations! Because of my rheumatoid arthritis walking was not an option, only a painful hobble around the house.I finally had one knee op Nov 2014, and between a very slow painful recovery and the seriously deteriorating other knee,I ended up pretty much housebound. I FINALLY had my second knee op the end of 2016,and have made a partial recovery and can walk with a stick.
April has seen a real improvement and for the first time in years I have been able to go to the corner shop, and yesterday actually managed a 10 minute walk, using a stick more like a balancing prop that having to lean heavily on it. Today I managed a 20 minute walk, with only one small rest.
After years of not being able to walk, this is wonderful.I feel happier and stronger, and its great.Certainly I enjoyed the freedom of getting out of the house, and am already more energised.
What a pity that being so inactive, plus the hysterectomy, plus all the medication has made me gain a lot of weight, almost 3 stone these last three years. All those health problems were probably masking prediabetes though nothing showed up on my many blood tests, and noone ever mentioned it or even suggested I lose weight.
I couldnt walk for ages after the knee op end of Nov 2016,and couldnt cook,so I ate a lot of takeaways, bread and snacks, and processed microwave food. Then my sister died 2nd Jan,and I spent many weeks comfort eating, piling on more weight. Finally pulled myself together and set about cutting down on snacks etc,and lost 6lbs,so was quite confident when I went for my normal yearly BP reading, which is usually around 129/75,due to my medication.I was envisaging improved mobility and weight loss and the future for this 69 year old seemed to be on the up,so imagine the shock to hear my HbA1c test showed a level of 49! When my BP was taken after the news it was 170/87 with shock. lol.
I have spent the last 10 days exploring weight loss on the net,and am intrigued by the LCHF style of eating. After explaining the reasons for my unprecedented blood test results, and that I had already started to lose weight and start walking,I somehow inveigled the nurse to give me 3 months to show I could make progress and maybe avoid full fledged diabetes. I have already lost 10lbs,set up a daily walking schedule,as my knees are improving - AND a weight training regime. Never done it in my life before, and am using the dumbbells without any weights yet as I am so out of training, but as you can see I am determined to get a grip on this devasting shock news, and am looking forward to encouragement and support from fellow sufferers! Good to be here.
