Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I don't want diabetes and don't know what to do. What the hell can I eat that doesn't have carbs or calories.

What have Calories got to do (got to do) with it ?
- Very little!
Fortunately Low Carb, High Protein and moderate to high traditional fats (ones that come attached to the food your great granny would recognise) are what woks for at least 50% of people. No need for either starving yourself ir running a marathon every day!

And it's just as well that carb counting works better than calorie counting because there are calories in all food (otherwise it wouldn't be called food), just as there are carbs in almost all with the most being in fruit and grains and potatoes. Base your meals on Meat (fatty cuts included), Fish, Eggs, full fat dairy and cruciferous veg and you will consume barely a carbohydrate. You will probably also reduce your Blood Glucose , possibly put your Diabetes into remission and also probably lose weight and normalise blood pressure (if required).

Sadly you have for now but making some changes there is every chance your HbA1C can be in normal range, how long it will take and how much work you will need to do depends on how far into the diabetic zone you are and how proactive you are about managing your condition.
Have a look at this link for ideas for meals and some do's and don'ts as well as a good explanation. You will realise there is still plenty you can eat. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

For an ordinary type 2, its the carbs that count.
I eat fish with salad or stirfry, steak with mushrooms, bacon with mashed swede plus eggs beaten in then fried. All fairly opulent but I am eating less and less as the years progress and I shrink down in size.

Welcome to the forum @julz194

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It can come as a shock, a d feel quite overwhelming - but there are lots here who have found various ways to live happily alongside their diabetes and manage it well.

How did your diagnosis come about? Had you been feeling ‘not quite right’ for a while? Or was it picked up from some sort of healthcare check with no apparent symptoms?

For a general overview of diabetes that you can work through in bite-sized chunks you might like to register for the Learning Zone (the orange tab in the main menu).

Alternatively, for a more personal account you could read Maggie Davey’s ‘letter to the newly diagnosed’ which many forum members have found very helpful.

Maggie Davey’s Letter to the Newly Diagnosed

And keep asking questions here too. We have members who have used weight loss to improve their BG levels, and others who have found a low carb approach easier and more sustainable for them. And still others who have opted for a combination of the two! With or without the support of medication if that is found helpful to support their blood glucose management.

Comparing experiences with others can help you find your own way through the different options and strategies to find an approach that suits you and your metabolism 🙂
