Hi I,m Craig and I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes . Feel terrible as I know I've done this too myself by not realizing and drinking far to much sugar in coca cola, lucozade ,apple juice and chocolate and too much whiskey Completely overwhelmed with all the conflicting advice on Google. Is there a list if foods that I can possibly have please. I really need to lower my blood sugar as it was extremely high !!!! Thanks so much in advance x

Hi @Craig 616 welcome to the forum. My type 2 diabetes was caused by genetics, lack of exercise, salt and vinegar crisps, kitkats and mini cheddars, so don't feel bad about it. The past is done, you can change your diet from now, don't beat yourself up about it.
What was your blood sugar level (HbA1c)? Are you on metformin or other medication?
What sort of foods do you like to eat?
Kind regards, Sarah

Welcome @Craig 616 🙂 Most Type 2s need to watch the amount of carbs they eat. That’s all carbs not just sweet ones. A good starting place is your diet before diagnosis. Cut out any sugary drinks, then look at how you can improve it by reducing carbs and adding more green veg, for example.

Hi Craig, welcome!
I felt very much like you at diagnosis.
The guilt was overwhelming.
But please remember there are plenty of people who eat and drink these things and don't have diabetes. Your lifestyle may be a contributor, but my nurse always says some are just predetermined to be diabetic.
Avoid carbs as mush as you can, have a whisky but maybe skip the potatoes that day.
I am aim for 40g carb per meal.
If you don't know much about food groups I would recommend the DESMOND course which your GP should refer you to.

Hi Craig
Sadly many of the foods which are healthy options are not so for somebody with Type 2 diabetes. As everybody is different in how their body copes with All carbohydrates is requires a bit of effort and work to find a dietary regime which suits you. But that needs to start with reducing portion size or cutting out some of the high carb foods.
Things like potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, cereals, pastry as well as the obvious cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks. Diet mixers are fine with your whiskey as an occasional drink certainly better than the potatoes, it is often the snacks that people automatically reach for when they have a drink.
Basing meals on meat, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy, nuts and seeds, vegetables, salads and fruits like berries with small portions of high carb foods you can still have filling tasty meals.
Making some substitutions will help so cauliflower rice or swede or celeriac instead of potatoes.

HI Craig,

Dont worry..I was diagnosed the same. All I did was cut out bread and rice, chocolate and all sugar. My three month reading went from 17 to 8.9. I have not had a fizzy drink or Sugary drink since March this year....

I isn't on any meds either. It up to you how much you want to get rid of it...And you can....

I'm exactly the same, chocolate and coca cola multiple times per day

Welcome to the forum @Craig 616

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Some new members find it can be really helpful to keep a brutally honest food diary for a week or two. Note down everything you eat and make an estimate of the total carbohydrate content (not just the ‘of which sugars’). This might sound like a bit of a faff, and will involve some weighing and measuring, and a bit of packet-squinting, but it will really help you to get to understand where the main sources of carbs are in your menu.

It also might suggest some easy swaps and changes to reduce the impact of some of your ‘big hitter’ meals, and the importance of portion control 🙂

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Pies, donuts, chocolate, burgers, bacon, sausages, it all finished up around my liver.
You're not alone.

The wise way is to use your new meter (you do have a meter?) to discover your own personal list of safe portion sizes for the foods you already love and eat; that will also help you add new foods to the menu over time. I wrote this to help you begin that process: Getting Started.
