My BMI is perfect, i never eat sugar or junk foods, i cook all my own, mostly veg and lean meat etc. and i work out. i have never been ill. I am 66 and i do have chronic insomnia. I can't help my insomnia after many years of trying, could this be the cause? what can i do? my bloods also showed up boarder line for kidney and liver functions, so as you can imagine, my anxiety levels are through the roof, and i cant see my GP for another 3 weeks ( Help)

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Sorry to learn about your diagnosis - clearly it's come as a shock to you - especially as you don't seem to fit the popular image of someone with T2. For the record I didn't either. Your insomnia could well be a factor. In fact there's a page about it on this very site:-

Do you have a family history of diabetes? You could try changing your parents if so but may be a bit late for that now. Sometimes diabetes is just one of those things you can’t avoid.

Hi
no family history at all. i guess it is purely just from lack of sleep, and i have tried every course and every therapy over the years and still cant sleep more than 3 hours a night. oh i feel so lost with this, as there doesn't seem anything i can do to help myself and pills will only give my liver/kidneys more work x i really appreciate any info/replies as just knowing i am not alone............ its so disgusting i have to wait 3 weeks to see GP.

Have you been to a Sleep Clinic @shelley b ? How long have you had the insomnia? I too think it seems likely your diabetes is connected to this.

At the end of the day, you can’t change what’s already happened so why bother thinking at all about why you have diabetes?

Do you eat lots of bread, potato, pasta? It isn't just about sugars, it's starchy foods as well that cause Blood glucose to rise.
Dr David Unwin says that a starch molecule is just lots of glucose molecules 'holding hands'.
You may have noticed for yourself that if you chew something starchy for several minutes it starts to taste sweet. This is your saliva breaking down the starch into glucose. It really starts to happen that fast!

Yes often people think they have a healthy diet but it is not always so if your body struggles to cope with carbohydrates not just sweet stuff but all carbs.
Have a look at this link for some ideas for modifying your diet as that will be a crucial factor in reducing your blood glucose. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
Have you tried anything like Nytol herbal or the pukka ones.

The causes of Type 2 are many and complex as others have described.
Just to add another one - medications can increase blood sugar and risk of type 2. Statins had some bad press in recent years for causing type 2, esp people in their 60's. Are you on statins by any chance?

Sorry to hear about your T2 @shelley b

Sometimes the causes will never be clear (though it’s a completely natural tendency to try to work out why!)

Some people just naturally build up visceral fat around organs in the abdomen more readily than others (sometimes called ‘thin outside, fat inside’), so BMI may not be giving you the whole picture. But your long-term insomnia could also be implicated too.

I guess in the end the reasons why are probably less helpful to you now than what you do next. Your body is having difficulty regulating glucose levels, so looking for a menu with reduced amounts of carbohydrates (including naturally occurring sugars in fruit and fruit juices, and starchy carbohydrates) may make it easier for your metabolism to keep blood glucose levels within the recommended ranges.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂
