One question I have right now.
Is there anybody here on the insulin Apidra? Reason I’m asking is my blood sugars never seem to stay stable and after speaking to my local pharmacist she said she’s got no over patients on this insulin.
Can anyone give comment on this insulin.
Thanks everyone.

I've not used it myself but a good friend uses it in her pump. It is reckoned to be the fastest acting 'bolus' insulin (ie quicker to become 'active' after injecting it) and also doesn't take so long to become inactive again. Novorapid and Humalog tend to last for 4 - 4.5 hrs and 5 - 5.5 hrs respectively before they 'run out of steam'. I use N and for me find it gets going after c. 10 minutes - other people say it takes up to 20 mins for them.

People prefer the one that works best for them personally rather than what it says on the box, and it's dead easy to change between the three if you have a reason to want to try something else and it seems you probably do! I've never tried Humalog either - I have never had any probs with N so I've never asked to. I have however changed my basal insulins several times over the last decades - initially from HumulinI to Lantus and subsequently to Levemir - before I had my pump.

Discuss it with your team and get it sorted.

Thank you for sharing your opinions on the insulin. I have a few friends that are on the novorapid and they don’t seem to have many problems
Think it’s about time I made another trip to the consultant to see what’s going on and wether he suggests I try the change.
I never seem to be able to get my bloods ok.
I’ve been type 1 for 38 years now and it gets very frustrating when I do all as I can and then I show a high blood sugar.
The doctors have spoken about the pump to me but it sounds scary. Is it! Does it work better!

Hi Matt
Thanks for the info. I really will have a serious think about the pump. I suppose after all these years of injections it’s daunting thinking of changing but I do think it’s a change I need. So much seems to be going wrong now.

Hi Pam. 🙂 I’ve been using Apidra since diagnosis 10 years ago so I can’t compare it to any of the other rapid insulins. My control has never been particularly tight, but I’ve always thought it was more to do with me and my relaxed attitude than Apidra’s fault. I got rid of Lantus cos it was failing me and now use Tresiba, which is MUCH better. 😛 As Jenny says, if you suspect Apidra isn’t right for you, ask for a change. Good luck!🙂

I switched to a pump after four years of injections. I find it so much more flexible and a lot easier to keep things level. It enabled me to drop my HbA1c by 10 mol, so much happier.

I changed to Apidra over 10 years ago after trying everything else available at the time and have never looked back. I much prefer its rapid action. If you haven’t tried a different insulin you can’t really tell whether it’s the insulin that’s causing your problems or something else. When you say your sugars aren’t stable, what exactly do you mean? I don’t think stability is a very realistic expectation with type 1 to be honest!
