Hi I’m nick I’m 46 and I have just started my diabetes journey , My diabetes was discovered after I was rushed into hospital with a Pulmonary embolism , now I’m on a cocktail of Metformin Apixaban and insulin , i’ve joined this group so I have people I can talk to about how I feel and about what to do with eating the right foods and exercise etc .

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, what a shock with your diagnosis and your embolism, hopefully that is being treated and you are recovering. I would think that you would have been given some dietary advise as with insulin it is a matter of balancing your carbohydrate intake with whatever insulin you are taking.
I imagine your HbA1C is quite high to have been given insulin straight away, knowing that and what insulins you are taking will help people make suggestions and comments.

I was wondering if the insulin was because of the pulmonary embolism? When my grandad had a heart attack he was put on insulin for 6 months, and I thought that was standard

HbA1c (sometimes called A1c) is a measure of glucose attached to red blood cells which is usually considered to offer a guide to average blood sugars over the past 3 months @Nickb76

People who aren't diabetic have one under 42, 42-47 is "at risk" or "pre-diabetic" and 48 or above is diabetic. Some people have over 100 at the time they're diagnosed.

If you don't know yours then you can ask your GP/nurse for the exact number, or depending what online access you have set up to your health records you may be able to find it on there

Welcome to the forum @Nickb76

Sorry to hear about the dramatic circumstances surrounding your diagnosis.

Is it Humulin I that you have been given? There are a variety of different types of Humulin, but taking it once a day suggests it’s probably Humulin I (isophane) which is designed to work in the background over approx 22 hours with a peak of activity in the first 8 hours.

Hope you begin to feel much better as your levels begin to gradually come down.

Have you been given much information about food from your Dr / clinic?

There are some handy general suggestions in the DUK ‘enjoy food’ downloadable PDF:

Good luck, and keep asking questions 🙂

Hi Nick,

That“s a lot of impact all at once for you! By the sounds of it, you are coping really well considering. I think reaching out and being on here will really help to - it has with me already with the pointers in the right direction.
