Hello everyone!

I find myself here after spending last week in hospital, I was taken in on monday suffering from DKA, I am now home, and feeling the best I have in months.

Although, I am quite overwhelmed with it all, I am being treated as type 1 until the test results come back. I am injecting insulin, which I am fine with although I find myself almost scared of what to eat now and how my body handles food.

Hoping things will fall into place soon.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear you had the DKA, but glad that you are feeling better. You probably had symptoms for some time but didn't know what they were, so now you are getting the treatment it will get better.

It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed now, there is a lot to take in. It does get easier. This forum is great for info and support from people who understands what you are going through, so make yourself at home!

Welcome @awp250 🙂 The first weeks after diagnosis are a huge shock and are hard, but it does gradually get easier.

Please don’t be afraid to eat. If you are Type 1, food didn’t do this to you. Type 1 is an auto-immune condition and just bad luck. What insulins are you taking? Eventually you’ll be able to adjust your meal-time insulin according to what you’re about to eat. That way you can eat pretty normally 🙂

Do ask whatever questions you want here. Nothing is too trivial or ‘silly’.

But even if you're not Type 1... you didn't do this to yourself either! Type 2 is caused by a complex mix of factors, diet is only one of them. Lots of people with bad diets never go on to develop diabetes.

That's true. And also people with healthy diets can develop diabetes, unfortunately.

I've had more than one person say to me after diagnosis "oh, can't believe you have diabetes, then I will have it because I eat more sugar than you!" 🙄

Welcome to the forum @awp250

It’s quite normal to feel a bit knocked sideways by a diagnosis with diabetes. Particularly if it cane on quickly, and out of the blue.

Many people liken it to a form of grieving, with all the jumble of emotions and stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance) swirling about. So give yourself time, be kind to yourself, and din’t feel you have to ‘fix it’ immediately.

Diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint, and the real trick is trying to keep an eye on the bigger picture, and not get too caught up in the minute details. Just keep plugging away at it, trying to spot patterns, experimenting, tweaking, and trying again. Long-term, it ends up being about spotting drifts and continually re-tweaking and updating the approaches you need to use at that time.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Each day seems to get a little easier.
Good! - one helluva steep learning curve to begin with. Having said that, it never completely levels out, there are always hills and valleys, bit like driving somewhere you've never been before. So, treat it all as a voyage of discovery and try and enjoy the scenery!

Has anyone yet pointed you at the Learning Zone, or recommended any books to read to assist your understanding?
