Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Was diagnosed at the end of June with Type 2 Diabetes (Hba1c 101) after having blood test for my blood pressure. My weight is 81/2 stone, height 5`-1”, so I was quite shocked. Am presently on 3 Metformin per day, increasing to 4 next week. Have had the eye xray (no result as yet) and awaiting pancreas scan. I have cut down on my sugar intake, am continuing to eat plenty of salads, fresh veges, one small new potato each day (which I often substitute with couscous or Chinese egg noodles.) Am interested to learn about the high protein high carb diet, can anyone help.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It comes as a shock to many people, but it sounds like it has come completely out of the blue for you.

Was it a routine blood pressure check? Or had you been feeling a bit off colour? And if so, had this come on over a few months? Did you notice any weight loss.

A pancreas scan is interesting - sounds like they are investigating the slightly atypical nature of your diabetes?

It might be sensible to wait until the investigations have concluded before making any dramatic changes to your menu. The part of your diet that will be contributing most to your elevated blood glucose will be carbohydrates. Sweet and sugary things are an obvious culprit, but you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

Moderating your total carb intake a little until you have a clearer idea of the nature of your diabetes might help to reduce your elevated BG and give your metabolism a bit of a breather?
 
Welcome @Sabbie1 🙂 I agree with the above - that it would be best to wait for your scan to see what exactly is happening and whether your diabetes is a little more complicated than first assumed.

Watching your carb intake in the meantime is sensible. If you’re able and happy to buy your own blood glucose meter to test at home that might be a good idea too.

A lot of people who are diagnosed and are either normal or underweight find it difficult to find recipes or a dietary regime that will suit then as most recipe books and resources focus on weight loss as being part and parcel of managing blood glucose.
Not that that is my problem but I think it is hard for them to think how to reduce carbohydrates without it resulting in unwanted weight loss.
The way seems to be to have more protein and fat in your diet and plenty of veg.
 
Thank you all for your very helpful replies. Yes you are right `everydayupsanddowns` about the scan, my gp decided this because I am normal weight etc. The blood pressure check was my normal one, which I should have once a year, with the blood test. However, due to Covid I had not had one for two and half years - could not access a gp at our surgery; they are just catching up. I should have said I am 76 in a fortnight, so I don't think I have done too bad. I will keep an eye on the carbs, I eat very small meals anyway (my family knowing this were really shocked too) and never buy-in prepared meals, but cook everything from scratch. I will try and stop worrying so much and, as you suggest, await the results of all the tests returning to my gp. Thank you all so much again. I am sure you may be hearing from me, so pleased I joined.
