A big hello from me,
Let me introduce myself, my name is Howard, i had type 1 diabetes for almost 21 yrs, until last year when i recieved a kidney / pncreas transplant.
Over my years with diabetes i was a complete fool to put it lightly and never looked after myself or payed attention to all the great advice from the experts.
Thinking i was invinsible and denying diabetes, i went on to follow ll the very commen complications from un controlled diabetes.
From everything to foot ulcers, nerve damage everywhere, eye sight problems with many operations, leading to eventually losing my driving licence.
To the final chapter of kidney failure, to have to recieve dialysis to basically keep me alive. Then to be later given a transplant to help me, but still have all the long lasting complications, but just means i dont have to inject insulin anymore for the time being.
Diabetes in my family is hugely impacted, from just people in my immediate family, from my brother and youngest sister, who sadly passed away due to diabetes , she also had kidney failure, and sadly passed away just aged 43.to recently my nephew developing it aged 28.
To grandads and auntie and uncles, although all this was amongst us, i still led my life ignoring it.
My aim here is to help people in anyway i can, to under stand all the complications and risks you take. i owe alot to my donor family who lost a loveone at the young age of 22yrs old, to give me a second chance of life.
If i can help anyone not have to get to my stage, im sure its all worth every second i spend helping.
Obviously i can only speak of my own experiences and not of others, and have no expertise in diabetes, but to talk to and try to understand, just how important good control is.
So if you have any questions, thoughts or concerns, im more than happy to talk more, you can p.m. and im sure to reply with a smile 🙂.
Im also trying to get a date to watch a transplant, so i can understand more whats involved, and early next year 2013, raise money for both diabetes uk, and kidney research, by doing a parachute jump.
A just giving page will be set up for support to raise money should anyone wish to pledge money.
Respect to all here, take care.
Regards Howard
