Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi. My name is Mike, aged 69,and live with my partner. and whilst I have been a member of Diabetes UK for over one year this is my first posting and am taking this opportunity to give a brief introduction to myself.
I have been a Type 1 diabetic since 1984, and have managed this throughout whilst working in several countries abroad. Most of these years have been conducted without too many hitches, but am recently experiencing some problems which the 'experts' do not appear to be able to totally resolve. As this option is more designed for newbies to introduce themselves. I will make a new thread detailing my concerns and questions, and hopefully some of you good members may be able to offer advice.
I am looking forward to making some friends thru this site and to learning of your interests etc. MIne are probably considered pretty much run of the mill, but include watching football live, philately and general collectables. I am very much into E-baying as a seller.

Hi Mike and welcome

Pleased that you have decided to post on the forum and share your experience as well as seek some ideas for a solution to the difficulty you are facing with your diabetes at the moment.
Would you like to tell us a bit about how you manage your diabetes (MDI or pump) and which insulin(s) you use and do you have Freestyle Libre to help monitor your levels or perhaps a real time CGM?

It sounds like you have lead an interesting life so far. What sort of job was it that took you to foreign climes?

Welcome to the forum @Mikeymike, from another Mike :D

Well done on your decades of pancreas impersonation, and for managing to juggle your BGs in far flung climes - was it somewhere very hot or cold? Were there any things you had to adapt to while abroad?

I’ll pop off and go and find your other thread to see what challenges you are currently facing.

Glad you have found us 🙂

Hi Barbara.
Thank you for your reply. My diabetes is controlled with MDI, normally taken approx 20-minutes before eating.I am certainly using Freestyle Libre 2. I do find it far better than finger pricking, although there are occasions when I need to revert to that method. This is especially when I need to get a more accurate reading. I do find that as I find sometimes my reading indicates that In am in hypo zone, but do not feel so. The finger prick results are usually 2 points higher.
With the help of Helen (my long suffering partner). I very much need to keep an eye on the carbs in the foods I eat as these are used to calculate insulin levels.
I am currently experiencing some difficulties with my blood controls, and will be posting on this seeking advice very soon.
Yes, since being diagnosed as diabetic in 1984 I have been lucky enough to have several overseas jobs (and perhaps not so lucky), and these have included Brazil, Angola, Portugal (where Helen was lucky enough to adopt a diabetic), and a year in Ireland.
Shortly after 1984 my pancreas was totally removed.
Chat later

hello there Mike,
bit late in contacting you to welcome you here but I made a mental note to respond when I first spotted your post. My wife and I are big fans of the annual Malton Food Market, the wonderful tearooms there and so many superb restaurants. Did I mention that we love North Yorkshire food? 🙂 Our son lives in N. Yorkshire and treats us at the best eateries there. Where in Ireland were you? I'm Irish and one of my daughters has been in Brazil, The Azores and now lives in the Algarve. One of my grandaughters has shown us stunning videos of her time in Iceland recently. I miss being able to travel but have a lifetime of great memories.
Hope to spot your posts again sometime, Mike
Take care.
Andy
