Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello this is my first time posting here although I've been a type 1 diabetic for 39 years Yikes !!!!!!
HL or Happylad is my nick name as I'm your typical grumpy dad.

Just like so many I thought it was time to check on the guide lines, as to be honest although I feel reasonably in control and healthy, I'm really scared to be honest. I'm classed as a key worker and help maintain the transport infrastructure.

Normally I wont blink an eye at bad weather, feeling ill or working with people whose personal habits could be better. Now though I'm starting to feel very unsure of carrying on at present. My employers would be fully understanding but its my own internal conflicts which I need to take control of. We are social distancing our selves at work but that still doesn't feel like enough at times and I'm still constantly have to remind people to back away.

Anyway its great to speak to fellow diabetics, the one thing I have learned in the past 3 or 4years when I attended the food freedom courses was its so good to talk and share.

Cheers HL or Simon

Hello HL @Happylad and welcome to the forum.
That's a great nickname!

There is a section on the forum Coronavirus / Covid19 Information where recent updates are posted, but you seem to be well informed about the main requirements.

Well done on being a key worker, at such a difficult time. I'm sure your work is much appreciated by many, but you have to ensure that you are doing the best you can to protect yourself as well.
I think that public knowledge and awareness is increasing all the time, so hope that those that you come in to contact with respect the social distancing rules.
If your employer is empathetic, is it possible to discuss other options on your job role, or other ways in which you can protect yourself at work?

Best wishes and please keep posting and looking at the forum there are several other threads of people in a similar situation to yourself.

Aw roight me aw babber!! Ow bist? :D :D :D

Welcome to the forum @Happylad

Glad you have found us! And THANK YOU for helping to keep the transport network going. So many unsung heroes are really earning the admiration of the whole country at the moment.

Good to hear that you are keeping to social distancing recommendations at work, but I can understand why sometimes it may not feel enough. My understanding is that T1 diabetes itself doesn’t necessarily significantly affect the risk of someone contracting the virus, but that if they do catch it, and are one of the small proportion who then develop a serious case, that the additional risk of glucose mayhem, DKA etc would be a very unwelcome complication.

Keep yourself safe, and keep an eye on the guidance and recommendations as they are updated.

Welcome to the forum @Happylad, Glad that you have found us.
I think many of us have wobbles at times with all that is happening.
It is understandable, but with T1 we are no more likely to catch the virus.
However if we do it just mucks up levels, and those sick day rules come into play.

Thank you for all that you are doing to keep things going.

Keep in touch.

Welcome to the forum @Happylad.

Thankyou for being there when the country needs you, all persons recognised as key workers whether a top surgeon, a nurse that includes care homes and GP surgeries or logistics. We understand your concerns and will back you no matter what you decide, keep talking and sharing.

Hello and welcome @Happylad , glad you've found us 🙂

It is most definitely helpful to speak to others who get what we're going on about! I hope you find a way to do what is right for you although I understand how difficult it must be when you're feeling pulled in different directions. Best Wishes.
