Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi i hope i am posting in the right area as i am new to this!
I am type 2 diabetic on 1.8mg Victoza and 4 x 500 mg Metformin a day.
I have been getting high blood sugar readings for a while now and cant seem to get them down. Usually between 12 and 14.
Got to see diabetic specialist nurse soon and she has been threatening me with going on to insulin.
Any suggestions to bring readings down?

Hi CornwallBoy, welcome to the forum 🙂 The two main things to look at in order to try and improve your levels are your diet and activity levels. Exercise will increase your sensitivity to the insulin your pancreas is producing, which should help reduce levels, so if you can do some regular activity that may improve things for you. I'd also suggest starting a food diary and recording in particular all the carbohydrate you normally eat. You can then look for areas where you might be able to reduce portion sizes of some items or substitute things for more 'diabetes-friendly' items.

I'd recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and also getting a book about the GI or GL diet (glycaemic index/glycaemic load) - The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction 🙂 This isn't a weight loss diet, but a way of choosing foods that will release their energy slowly and steadily and thus have less impact on your blood sugar levels. To find out how you personally are affected by different foods, test your blood before eating, and then one or two hours afterwards to see how tolerate them - if your levels go too high after eating you know to cut that from your diet.

Hi cwb and a warm welcome to the forum, are you able to post a typical days food you would have like brekkie, snacks lunch tea etc, then maybe we can see where changes need to be made if any

I usually have porridge and a cup of tea for breakfast, lunch can be anything from a roast meal to a jacket potato with various fillings and tea would be soup or fish
I think one of my problems is that i tend to "graze" in the evenings and this could be biscuits, fruit scone or crisps

Right im no expert, but maybe try juggling around each meal for a while, im not sure you work or not so on a mornings you may be in a rush, but maybe try grilled bacon and a flat mushroom or 2, also a good suggestion and I often have this is egg, either scrambled or poached.
With your jacket potato have you tryed a sweet potato as an alternative to the usual potato, its really nice and tastes good with baked beans on or low fat cottage cheese which is what i have had more then anything in mine.

If you just having soup for tea maybe your not eating enough and that making you graze , your body is telling you in not full and your finding these little snacks to keep the hunger pangs at bay but its only working for a short time..

Maybe try chicken dishes a lovely salad with all the usual greenery but add some nice treats to it, a lovely fillet of fish on a bed of spinach and cherry toms with grated carrot in is another fave of mine.Theres all sorts out there its just changing your way of thinking and eating healthier. Its not all about punishing us cause we still can have a treat now and again but in moderation,.

All of that was just bunged together in a huge ramblelol, but theres a food/ recipe section on the forum so maybe take a look at that and get some new ideas.
