Hi everyone.
Aged 64, Type 2 diet controlled for 10 years but! Just out of hospital after 5 day stay - BG reached 34😱. Now on Metformin 2x500mg which seems to be working:D. now BG down to single figures.

Hi Brian,

Sorry to hear about your demise. However, you must be doing something else right too because, in my opinion, metformin tablets alone wouldn't take your blood glucose levels down from 34 to single figures.

Changed your diet perhaps? In my opinion, diet is the most powerful means of dealing with your Type 2 situation. Exercise and weight loss will help too but without changing one's diet then it's always going to be a massive battle.

Good luck and best wishes - John

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome John - and you are right. The five days in hospital were spent looking for infection, establishing a diet and the correct Metformin dosage. I have never been obese, BMI always 25/26. But I do seem to have developed an intolerance of bread (any type).

Hi again Brian,

Yes - I thought so! When I started testing, I found it was the starchy carbohydrates - i.e. ceraels, bread, potaoes, pasta, rice, pizza etc - that were causing my situation to deteriorate - it's what the healthcare people call the inevitable "progression" of diabetes. I was certainly going down that pathway!

Once I cut back dramatically on those foods my situation reversed and my blood glucose levels have been normalised. These days, I eat hardly any bread, cereals or potatoes - and not much risce or pasta also.

Diet is more powerful than the metformin tablets.

Testing helps tremendously too so that you can learn what different foods are doing to your blood glucose levels. Are you testing?

Good luck and best wishes - John

Hi Brian, welcome to the forum.

Many thanks for the warm welcome Loubie. Notice you are from Hindhead. I know it (and dislike the lights) well. Is the by-pass finished yet? My Sister lives in Liphook, my son in Headley and I lived in West Sussex for nearly 30 years before returning to Scotland on early retirement.

Thanks for the warm welcome Steff.

Hi Phil - Thanks for the welcome
