Just wanted to say hi, my daughter was diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago, now age 14. Recently had a bad patch with levels all over the place. I know its probably her age but that doesn't help much. Would love to hear from anyone who has gone through the teens and can offer any suggestions.

Hi Gillsb, welcome to the forum🙂 We are certainly attracting a lot of parents here lately! Hope you find the forum useful 🙂 I was only diagnosed aged 49, so I'm a rather different case to your daughter, but we have quite a few parents of children going through their growth spurts etc. - can be a very difficult and unpredictable time. I hope things settle down soon.

p.s. I moved your post to it's own thread as it can become confusing sometimes who is welcoming who! Hope you don't mind.

Newly diagnosed Type 2 - am learning!

I am newly diagnosed Type 2 and am learning along the way. How many times is one supposed to test each day? As i am newly diagnosed, my Nurse has given me urine sticks to use and i am on a 3 month plan to lose more weight and carry on with excercise to basically see how my levels figure at the end of it (ie to see if they have improved or not). Against what my Nurse has said, i still finger test as it gives me peace of mind and it gives me an idea of what foods are OK for me to eat and those that aren't. At the moment, i test first thing in the morning before breakfast, then before my evening meal and then 2 hours after my meal and sometimes before i go to bed. Do i need to test as often as this at the moment and if not when are the most important times to test?

Advice greatly appreciated

Hello Gillsb

Welcome to the forum! My son is 13, diagnosed last year, so we have been battling with growth from almost the very beginning...

What regime are you on?

There are at least two other parents on this forum with teenage children with type 1...

What sorts of problems in particular are you encountering? Feel free to be detailed! You will find that you get lots of thoughts about it all, and some of it may just hit the nail on the head.

Also, do you know www.childrenwithdiabetes.org? They have a uk branch, and an email group, and it is only for those with type 1 children. There are parents on there with years of experience, and lots with teens.

I find that I use this forum (diabetessupport) more however...just my own preference. Though I keep up with the childrenwithdiabetes one. But you could check them all out? Several of us belong to both.

Anyway, all the best, and look forward to hearing from you.

Patricia

Hi Patricia,

Megan is on novorapid with meals and levemir before bed. We we going along nicely until the last few months when things seemed to get a bit out of control. Higher levels than normal, more hypos and just seemed to be chasing the diabetes all the time rather than being in control of it.

I must admit I think the whole diabetes thing had caught up with me and I was struggling with all the challenges. Haven't seen a diabetic nurse for 2 years now. In the end I went to my GP in desperation and she was horrified with the lack of support we have had and we now have an appointment to see somebody. Talking things through with her was great and made me realise how anxious I had become which wasn't helping Megan.

We decided to go back to basics with food and start as we did in the beginning and things over the past few days are much better but I do find her monthly periods ploay a big part with things although each month it is different. She has now been on the pill for 5 months to try and settle her hormones down so fingers crossed things will stay under control.

Sorry to rabble on but it is nice to have a moan about things and get them off my chest. How do you find the teenage years are affecting things?

Hi Gillsb,

Hope you find this site helpful and some support for you and your daughter there are quite a few parents on here who are all very friendly and helpful. I was 19 when I was diagnosed (it was a week before my 20th) so I can't help with growth spurts and levels unfortunately. Hope things settle down a bit for her.
