What a great surname! Welcome to the forum cakie🙂 I think Lou is learning a lot already. Hopefully, with your help and a better healthcare team behind her she will soon be showing great results! Please feel free to ask anything you may be unsure of and just generally join in - it would be good for the rest of us to get your perspective on things!

lol thanks northener. She is picking it up for sure, its just so hard for me to understand what she needs to do and what i should do for her. I struggle with what she should be taking and what she shouldnt be eating lol

I feel horrible saying it, but Louise becomes relutant to take her insulin and can even become an angry drunk when she goes low. Any advice would be amazing.

There's a really good book that covers everything you need to know about Type 1: Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas (amazon link)

I think that if you could get a copy (they might have one in the library) it would explain a lot for you.

When people go low, their brain is being starved of energy so it sends out lots of distress signals - adrenaline causes the sweats, shakes and aggressive behaviour that some people exhibit. You need to stay calm adn get her to drink some fruit juice, lucozade or full sugar coke and this will instantly feed the brain and the symptoms should quickly subside.

i stay calm, but the only way i can get her to drink it is if i shout at her, she becomes so dispondant and refuses to do anything. i had to learn a small amount about glucose and diabetes when i taught taekwondo, but it has been of no use wat so ever.

Just do what I want and you'll be fine 😉 lol xx

Hi Cakie and welcome 🙂

Hi cakie
firstly you've already done the best thing ever for Lou by wanting to understand this diabetes and help her X
I know lou has had a well tough time recently with her BS levels and is looking for a new clinic .... she has also in the last few weeks done brilliantly by really taking her condition on board and understanding she needs to get in control of it WELL DONE LOU !!! she ll need support in her diet which as a taekwondo teacher you already have a grips re fitness...do it together!!! support her in her determination i have noticed how much she has taken on board already despite the huge changes occuring in her life xx
ps whens the wedding??? dont tell me.... when shes organised it !😱

4th June 2011... Im a bit worried about the food and carb counting that! lol I know its a while off and I'll hopefully be able to just look at it and know roughly how much to take but still worried ..

thanks am64. Im trying my hardest to get to grips with it but its so hard to know what to do or say. We both need to get fit as i had to give up due to injury. She is working so hard to control it and im trying to help but not sure what i can bring to the table so to speak. As louise just said june 4th 20011. me in a purple kilt and purple converse.

the image it conjures up !!! well this is a learning curve at the moment im a T2 so its diff for me but i would say just cut out as much refined food, sugar and go for the low GI option as any healthy diet would suggest, however lou is on insulin so you'll need advice from the insulin users as what to inject
there is a thing about excercise over a certain level but have a look at excercise fitness part of forum ....

We have been cutting down all the rubbish, but its the not knowing what she should eat that causes the problems. We have looked online about foods but there just isnt really enough about diabetes and the diet. You were just saying about the diabetes and exercise, i only found out about a month a go that after a while of exercising your blood sugars can go high. I was never taught this when i was teaching which i think is terrible. More needs to be taught about the effects of diabetes during exercise.

Hi Cakie!
