Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi all my name is Andy but everyone calls me AJ. I have had diabetes now since 2009. The doctors where I was diagnosed didn't seem that bothered by my diagnosis and so that me not really taken it that seriously which I know was wrong but I have read up on type 2 and am taking it a lot more seriously now. The doctors I have now have made me appreciate that my condition can be serious if I don't look after myself so I have joined this forum to learn even more.

Hi Andy, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear that you have found doctors that have a better attitude to diabetes. It is a serious condition, but with the right knowledge and application you can learn to manage it well and reduce your risks of any of the nasty complications. Are you on any medication for your diabetes? Do you test your blood glucose levels in order to monitor the effects of your food choices on your levels? Many of our members have found this the best method of improving their blood glucose control, by identifying which foods they tolerate well, and which really ought to be reduced or removed from their diet. Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to understand what I mean. If you don't have a meter it's worth asking your GP for one, explaining how you want to use it 🙂 I'd also recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter to help you with your understanding of diabetes.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will be very happy to help! 🙂

Lovely thank for the advice northerner. Will check out the posts and get in touch with my go as the monitor I do have is old and playing up now.

Hi AJ, I have a similar back story, What meds are you on? I turned my corner at the end of Jan this year after a week in hospital. My HbA1c has been 118 in the past 14/3 I was 62, 6 weeks of being good. My next test is on the 21/4 which will give me my 3 months of looking after myself. I pretty much done what northie explained above, e.g. Rice Krispies for breky sent my blood from 5 to 9 in an hour, replaced that with burgen bread toast and marmite and it hardly moves, if I'm over 6 I just have scrambled egg and mushrooms no carbs. Wish you luck on your journey Al

Not on any. I was living near Brighton when first diagnosed and the dr said I could control it with diet. But I moved to Cornwall almost 3 years ago and Drs there sed I should be on medication. So looking into it this week. Never had a HbA1c test I don't think. Thanx for advice and help. Had an anxiety attack last week which is not like me and found out today it could have been a hypo attack instead

Would be unusual to hypo without any meds, unless your doing a lot of exercise without food.

Hi and welcome Andy.

Welcome to the forum, Andy Gray. If your meter is playing up, it might be worth trying replacing battery / batteries.
