Welcome, and well done for finding us. I muddled through without help for years!

Hi gwnm, welcome to the forum 🙂 I would suggest that a good place to start is by reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and also getting a copy of the highly-recommended Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these should all set you up well with a good understanding of what it all entails. If you have any questions please ask away - nothing is considered 'silly', so if it is bothering or confusing you, please let us know and we will try our best to help! 🙂

Have you been given any medication for your diabetes? How were you diagnosed?

i will go buy the book on monday, i was told by doctor after a routine blood test where he checked my blood sugars, had another one last week and its still the same level, i spoke to the doctor yesterday and he said i should go on medication but i take enough tablets now and really don't want to take more, especially when i don't know my daily levels and its just a matter of "you are overweight, so need to take medication" so not sure what to do just yet, get fed-up with doctors who look at me or hear how heavy i am and to make snap judgements

i do have a meter its the bayer contour xt machine, just need to get the test strips now

Good to hear you have a meter - are you being prescribed the strips? If not, they can work out quite expensive, so try to persuade your doctor that you want to test, at least initially, so that you can assess your diet and determine what elements you might need to remove and what can stay - this will help you to retain flexibility in your diet and may also identify items that you might think are healthy, but which your body doesn't tolerate well 🙂

need to persuade doctor to read my notes better lol, but yes i will work on the doctor this week to get some strips and see if i get to manage my condition myself

Welcome to the forum gwnm 🙂

Yeah, I got caught on a routine MOT a few months ago! Still, better to know than not and have chance to self-sort sooner, eh. 🙂

If doc mithers about prescribing strips to T2s, I bought SD Codefree meter as recommended on this forum. Tested mine's accuracy per the esteemed Doctor Bernstein's book:4 blood tests back to back and results within 5% and it passed. I think even 10% is considered good. Strips are about ?7 for 50. Great value price for very consistent results, I'd say. Could be being consistently inaccurate, mind, but I doubt it. :D

Welcome gwnm if you have any questions ask away these guys will put you on the right track.

yeah i saw that and if it comes down to me having to buy a machine and strips i will, but hopefully doc will see the sense in me testing rather than going on more meds
