Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi

Im Simon, a recently diagnosed 39 year old with Type 2.

Knew something was wrong, was drinking 8-10 litres of water a day, getting up 4-6 times a night to urinate, and lost about a stone. Went to GP's, fasting blood sugar was around 20. highest was 29.7

Now on 4 x 500mg Metformin per day plus 40m Gliclazide.

Also been Very Low carbing, last 5 Blood readings 6.9,7.4,6.8,6.4

A big improvement. not sure if my diet has helped or just the medication.

Hope youre all good.

Simon

Hi Simon, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sounds like you have made a great start getting to grips with things. I'm pretty sure your change to a low-carb diet will have helped. Are those your waking readings or a mixture of before and after meal readings?

Hi Simon

A baptism of fire LOL to welcome you to the club no-one wanted to join!

It has some lovely members though ........

You are doing pretty OK by the sounds of it, so well done and fire away with all the questions you ever want to ask .....

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂

I agree, looks like you are doing a good job with those numbers 🙂

Thanks all for your kind welcome. you are right, the club that no one wants to join..... how right lol!

At first when i was diagnosed i felt my life was over - took a couple of weeks to accept it. I bought a few diabetic cookbooks ( i love cooking) and have been making fresh meals from this ever since. My wife has also been eating the same as me as well, so hopefully we will start to see the benefits.

Was really confusing when i first saw the dietician. She used the eatwell plate and i was told to eat starchy carbs with each meal. I knew this to be wrong, so i have been having low carb diet.

I need to lose weight - my BMI is about 36. Hopefully this will help, although i have been eating a lot of brazil and other nuts, which i know are high in calories.

The main question i have is i used to be a takeaway king....... now i only have chicken kebab, with not all of the pitta bread. Can anyone put forward ideas of takeaways that are ok for a diabetic?

🙂

Whoops sorry - one other thing.

The highest reading i get when testing blood sugar is always the one straight after i wake up. This reading is higher than even after i eat.

Is this normal?

Simon hi and a warm welcome to the forum x

Sounds like it could be something called 'Dawn Phenomenon'. This is where your liver releases extra store of glucose in the morning to give you a 'boost' of energy for the day. However, as a diabetic you can't use this very well so it just ends up raising your levels. There are various things that people have tried to prevent this. Some find that having a small protein-based snack at bedtime can help, or eating something protein-based soon after getting up can 'switch off' the liver's action and minimise the rise.

Thanks so much. makes sense. Maybe ill have a slice of ham or something before bed 🙂

Any suggestions regarding my post on takeaways above ? 🙂

I haven't had a takeaway for years, so can't help you there I'm afraid! What I do that might be an idea is I make up a large pan of things like curries, chilli, sweet and sour etc. and freeze into individual portions so I can just take one out when it takes my fancy. Much cheaper than shop-bought and probably quicker (nuke in microwave!), plus you know what has gone into it 🙂

I dont eat takeaways often, but when I do I try and eat chinese with as little sauce as poss and no rice/noodles etc - there's still a fair bit of carbs in the sauces but you'll need to try a few to see which affect you least. Curries - try to go for the dry ones to avaoid the calorific and carb laden sauces, and again, avoid the rice/naan/etc. Pizzas are just high in carbs. Some people can deal with them, others cant, its down to experimentation. Ditto Fish and chips.
With a bit of experimentation, you'll be able to find a few meals that dont raise you too high, and then stick to them when you fancy a take out. But dont worry too much as long as you dont eat them all the time - we all need a treat now and again!

Alan Shanley has a different takeaway for each country he visits.

Kebabs - eat the meat and salad etc but leave the pita. Fish & Chips - just buy a fish and leave most of the batter. (unless it's mega thin of course) Burgers, pile everything onto the smallest half of the bun, and leave half the bun. etc etc !

. Fish & Chips - just buy a fish and leave most of the batter.

I wait until my husband gets fish and chips then I misappropriate a chunk of fish with the batter taken off and 3 chips (choosing the 3 that look to have the crispiest corners). It satisfies my longing for fish and chips but doesn't break either my carb or calorie allowance for the day. 😉

Hi Simon sounds like you have your head in the right direction, Welcome
