I would like to introduce myself; my 12 year old son was diagnosed with Type 1 last year.
It has been a life changing experience for all of us and he is struggling to cope with it at this point; I am wondering about other people's experiences and ways in which I can offer him the support he needs???
 
Welcome to the forum! There are several parents here who will no doubt be able to give you lots of good support and advice.

I was diagnosed at 15 but cant really remember how I coped, my younger brother had it since he was 2 so it wasnt really a shock although I clearly remember the denial, anger, sadness stages, but they were over quite quickly..

Have a browse in the parents section, get chatting to some of them, I am sure you will come away with some good tips on supporting your son....:D

Also, if you haven't already got a copy, I'd recommend getting Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1. Well, maybe not everything, but for those things it doesn't, you have us! 🙂

What insulin regime is your son on?

Hi sugarplum 🙂 welcome to the forum. I was diagnosed aged 2 (I'm now 22).

Have you joined the Children With Diabetes UK emailing list? A great resource for parents - hundreds of parents emailing each other daily, asking and answering each others questions, sharing experiences, etc! There are several people with 12 year old sons on there 🙂

My son is 12 and on an insulin pump - he was diagnosed 2 years ago. If you join the mailing list that Northerner mentioned you will get lots of support and there may be families who live near you who you might like to meet up with. We have a weekend holiday in May every year for families with a type 1 child - but you have to be a member of the list if you want to join us.🙂Bev
