Hello everyone Following a third bout of the dreaded covid and having suffered from Long covid since my last bout 2 years ago
I have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and Hypertension which resulted in me having a minor stroke. It all came as a huge shock. So I have joined the group to seek advice and guidance on life changes and other experiences of those in a similar situation.

Oh yuk Bob. We'll help you all we can.

Higher blood pressure has a knock-on effect on blood glucose, unfortunately so the very first thing I'd like to know please, is whether whatever tablets you've been prescribed have started to work for you and also whether you have been prescribed any medication for the diabetes. Plus (sorry!) what test results you were told of that actually told the docs you had Type 2 diabetes? Finally - have you got home testing equipment to use yourself for either or both?

What a blow @Bobski . You have really been through the mill.
Whatever questions that you have this is a good place to ask. There is a wealth of experience to draw on.
No questions are silly on here. Just ask.

Hi thanks for the reply I am now on the following meds
Metformin 2x daily
ramipril 1x daily
clopidogrel 1x daiy
atorvastatin 1x daily
lansoprazole 1 x daily

blood results were 78mmol
cholesterol 5.1
BP was 214/210
was diagnosed whilst I was in hospital as I thought the tingling in my face and hand were a possible new covid symptom but sadly not it was a stroke

I have bought a blood testing kit as well as a bp monitor to check my levels on both. Thankfully BP has come down and I'm slowly beginning to understand the impact on what I eat Readings in hospital were between 19-23 4 weeks later ranging between 8-12.4

Have a look at this link as it may give you some ideas for modifying your diet https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
Many do find this low carbohydrate approach successful in reducing blood glucose.
As you have a monitor a suggested strategy to testing which gives meaningful information on which to make dietary changes is to test before you eat and after 2 hours when an increase of no more than 2-3mmol/l would indicate your meal is OK. People also test on waking as a check on progress day to day, week to week, etc and also if they feel unwell.
As your levels come down then the aim is 4-7mmol/l fasting and before meals and no more than 8-8.5mmol/l 2 hours post meal.

Welcome to the forum @Bobski

Glad you have found us! Well done on the progress you have been making already.

It can be so helpful to have shared experiences with other people walking the same tricky path, and facing similar challenges. We have literally centuries of lived diabetes experience on the forum, and lots of different people using a wide variety of different approaches to help them manage their diabetes. There’s no one single approach that will work for everyone, so it’s more about finding an approach or a combination of strategies that work for you, and which you can maintain long term. 🙂
