Type1 for 46 years, for the past 3 months developed resistance to Humulin M3. Glucose levels are from 15 to 28, controlling with 2 extra injections of Novorapid. Did anyone experienced similar? If so, would highly appreciate your help. Thank you in advance. Leah

Is there a particular reason you're on a mixed insulin, e.g. carers administering the insulin for you etc, or is it just that thats the insulin you've always used? You would probably find much more control over your blood sugars and much more flexibility in your diet/exercise/lifestyle if you considered a more modern insulin regime, as it sounds like your current regime isnt working for you.

I was happy and in control for many years with 2 injections per day. .Always eating healthy, active and around 50 kg weight. Could you please clarify "modern insulin regime". Thanks

A modern regime is a basal bolus routine, with carb counting to adjust the doses of bolus. Rather than taking fixed doses of basal and bolus in the mixed insulin pen.

Still learning how to use this site. .... by any chance could you suggest which basal bolus insulins considered the best? and does it mean 4 or more injections per day?

Thanks for the useful site.

Hi Leah*

There are many different insulins available for both basal insulin (background insulin) and the bolus (quick acting ) insulin to cover the carbs you choose to eat.

With the mixed insulins you need to match you meals to the insulin that you have already injected.
With the basal/Bolus regime, you do one or two injections of the basal insulin, and then inject each time you choose to eat, to match the carbs in your meal. So it is a lot more injections but it gives you a lot more flexibility. They also teach you how to do corrections for any high BG levels, for example when you are ill.

As you read through things come back with any questions.

Welcome to the forum @Leah *

Hopefully with a change of insulin you can get begin to make a dent in those high BGs. they must be making you feel pretty grim :(

A more flexible multiple daily injection (MDI) regime might offer a lot of extra options and adjustability, but you could also switch to an alternative mixed insulin (though that’s quite an unusual system these days)

There’s a page with various insulins compared here if it helps

Lots of friendly folks here to help you transition to MDI if you decide to go in that direction 🙂
