Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Just wanted to say hi to all the members on here. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes on Wednesday as my hba1c was 59. I have to be honest and say I’ve been pretty upset since I was told although I am accepting the situation. I feel almost angry at myself as I’m only 36 and was told I was pre-diabetic 2.5 years ago. I had a chance to change things but admittedly I’ve not taken things seriously. I was due to have my annual bloods done November 2020 but due to COVID these were not done. Unfortunately these past few months I started to feel something wasn’t right with me. I have been getting awful headaches, recurrent skin infections and a recent surgical wound was not healing very well. Eventually I got my bloods taken on Tuesday after expressing my concern and sadly got the call on Wednesday with the news I was dreading. I’ve already made small changes to my diet but know I have a lot to learn. I have an appointment with my diabetes nurse on the 16th to go over everything. Hopefully reading your posts and speaking to you all on here will really help me xx

Welcome to the Forum @Haggled I'm T1 but I'm sure other members who are T2 will be along to offer any advice needed on the specifics of being T2.

Hello @Haggied . Welcome to the forum.
Ask all the questions you need too about diabetes , we will do our best to help .

What changes have you made to your diet etc.

If you register on the T2 section of the learning zone on the Orange link near the top of each page , you will learn loads .

Thank you both so much for your replies. Perfect, I will join the learning zone. Anything to help me get my head around everything!

No drastic changes to diet yet until I understand more on how to manage my diabetes. Hopefully understand more after my appointment with diabetic nurse. Just done simple changes like cutting out junk food/processed food. My partner has been really supportive and we have spent the last couple of days looking into meal plans and reading up on T2 and how diet affects things. It is a lot to learn and will be a big adjustment. I have weight to lose too so I know this is all for the best.

Welcome to the forum @Haggied

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Try not to be too hard on yourself with recriminations about what has gone before. No one asks for a diagnosis with diabetes, and berating yourself can be quite demotivating. Better to focus on the positive changes you are making, and learning to live well alongside your diabetes.

Great to hear that your partner is being supportive, that makes a big difference. Cutting back on junk and processed food is a great first step. There are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

Many new members also find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Note down everything you eat and drink and make a reasonable estimate the amount of total carbohydrate (not just ‘of which sugars‘) in the meals and snacks you are eating, to begin to get a better of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu. It is those foods which will have the most direct effect on raising your blood glucose, and everyone has a different tolerance to various types and amounts.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Haggied

A diagnosis at any time is a shock, and takes and takes a bit of getting used to. The changes that you have already made to your diet will have some impact, as many processed foods are high in carbohydrates, which all get changed into glucose once inside.

I am glad that you have found the forum, and would encourage you to ask whatever questions arise.
nothing is considered silly on here, and there is plenty of experience to tap into.

Ket us know how you get on with your appointment.
