Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi I'm quite new to all of this I got diagnosed in December my blood sugar was really high and I felt so ill
I am now getting my blood sugar under control but over the last two days I have started to have heart flutters and just wanted to ask if it something I should be worried about thank you

It's usually a sign your blood glucose has been too high for too long. 2+ months after diagnosis I'd have expected your blood glucose to come down not go up. Is it your GP who is treating you and if so have you told him - if not ring up and tell him! There's a chance you don't have type 2 diabetes - if you're really type 1, you'll be on the wrong treatment.

Thank you so much for your reply I am seen by the diabetic nurse I will call Monday and try and get an appointment

Welcome to the forum @Tam22

Are you checking your BG levels at home with a BG meter? And if so, what sort of levels are you seeing?

Hope you are able to get a phone appointment or e-consult to chat through your concerns, and get your mind put at rest 🙂

Hi thanks for your response the nurse is having me check my blood in the morning I have stayed at around 8.4 sometimes a little higher but this morning was great 6.8 not sure what's going on hopefully I can see someone tomorrow thanks again

Checking only once a day is a bit like getting in the car and driving somewhere without looking through the windscreen or checking the speedometer .....

Hi, a couple of other things to consider
low iron stores particularly for the ladies
Electrolytes imbalance especially when low carb
Thyroid
Anxiety
It’s easy to think all medical issues are blood sugar related, I’m not saying your heart flutters are not related to diabetes just that there can be lots of causes, usually harmless… I have a lot of these feeling, I call them the flip flops. I’m anemic with anxiety, sometimes it’s hard to tell if the flutters are causing or are a result of my anxiety but they do seem to appear at certain times of the month so I’m trying to get my iron back up. Let us know how you get on if you manage to get an appointment.

I thought I would have to check my blood more often but the nurse said to just take it in the morning and record it

Hi thanks for your reply I do have anxiety but because I'm so new to the diabetic club I didn't know if was something that might be serious because of the diabetes I will keep you updated if I can get an appointment

By only taking it in the morning you are seeing what may be the lowest of the day and not any high levels as a result of the carbohydrates you are eating. Having a high reading because the carbs you are having for your meals are too much for your body to cope with will be reflected in a high HbA1C.
Many people use their monitor to check if the meals they are eating are suitable so look for no more than a 2-3mmol/l increase from before eating to 2 hours after and aim at no more than 8.5mmol/l 2hours post meal.

You do need to establish a strategy rather than just random testing, also keep a food diary along side your before and after meal readings, this will help you identify any problem foods so you can then decide it's OK or whether you need to cut something out or reduce the portion size of any high carb component and make a substitution for something lower.
You could just start with one of your meals a day to find some meals which are fine, and then do the others. You will eventually build up a good repertoire of OK meals and would need to test those again.

I think you are 100% right to get a check up, I just want to reassure you that there are plenty of reasons for this. Diabetes can send your mind into overdrive. Sorry you suffer with anxiety too xx

Hi @Tam22 welcome to the DClub.
We are all different and find the best way to manage our condition varies.
The point about testing bloods is one of these variations.

For people with Type 1 we test our blood sugars to help us calculate how much insulin we take.
With type 2, my understanding (I have the other type so my understanding is based on what I read rather than experience) is we test to the see the impact of decisions we have made. A morning only test is not pointless - it gives us an indication of long term trends. To understand the affect of other things like exercise and food, most people test more often at the start and may tail back a bit when they have learned - what impact certain foods have and what impact certain types of exercise have on us … because we are all different.

I have SVT so my heart is all over the place.Waiting to get an operation to sort it... But mild palpitations are common in pre and actually menopausal women.

For a good idea of your glood glucose and your bodies ability to process it, you need to take it on waking, and then take it again two hours after eating - ideally that's four pinpricks a day - before and after breakfast, and then I do before and after dinner.
