Hi there, Helen here. Diagnosed T2 this week with a low reading of 48 but am going to wait for a second Hb1AC test in October before getting too hung up on being diagnosed. In the meantime, I am focusing on healthy eating (reducing cards and general portion size) and making sure I get daily exercise. My BMI is 31 and I would benefit from losing a few kilos! I am also hypothyroid and suffer from high blood pressure, so focusing on healthy eating and exercise will be good. I am wary of strict diet and exercise regimes as I have suffered eating disorders in the past. I can get very hung up on numbers and targets as a way of maintaining the feeling of control and this does worry me. So it’s going to be slow and steady for me!
 
Hi HellyMac, welcome to the forum!

Glad to hear that you've got a focus and are making a great start. Having a low reading is good and means that things could turn around with a few consistent changes.

Like you say, slow and steady wins the race. Figure out a way that works for you to reduce your carb and sugar intake and incorporate some exercise.

Sorry to hear about your history of disordered eating, and very wise of you to take things steadily, and avoid too much focus on the details, numbers and restrictions that might be triggering for you.

Hopefully with the few gentle tweaks you are making, your 48mmol/mol will reduce by your next follow-up appointment.

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but pleased that it has been picked up so early with your HbA1c just into the Diabetic range. With a few changes to diet and level of exercise you may find that you can get things back in range.

There is plenty of experience to tap into on here, so read around and fire away with any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here. Just ask.
 
Slow and steady is a very sensible approach @HellyMac. With that HbA1C you should find small, sustained changes will give you a good result over time. 🙂

Hi @HellyMac I've never has an eating disorder, but I can say that cutting the carbs and not bothering about counting calories put my T2 Diabetes into remission and took 2st off my weight without me trying. A Low Carb 'way of eating' often reduces Blood Pressure too, so be aware that your BP meds may need to reduce.
If you enjoy exercise fine, but if like me you hate it then all that is needed is a 30 min brisk walk 5 times per week ( I do it daily (except when its pouring with rain) so as to stay in a routine. The best for of exercise for T2 diabetes (on top of that 30 min walk) is lifting weights in order to build muscle - which will help absorb more of that glucose in the blood stream.
