I got diagnosis monday by phone a bunch of numbers that meant nothing to me instructions on taking new med and whot seems a future of endless doctors appointments first one in 9 days.Doc recommended this site and i can see why but please tell me that there are some alternate foods that normally i wouldnt take one bite and run for the tooth brush. On a more serious note how long dose diabetes take to cum on as 10 days before first biood test i was in hospital for 3 weeks they did numerous biood tests and did blood sugars on a daily basis no mention of a problem

Hi @oldngrumpy and welcome to the forum..... grumpy is OK but less of the old!😉

Good place to start is the numbers you were given. Do you have them? If so, they will give some context and we will be able to focus any answers we give.

PS... your Doc is obviously on the ball and that is a good start!

Typically about 10 years of gradually rising fat in the body and blood glucose levels before T2D takes hold. You need to lose weight to get rid of the excess fat in your liver and in your pancreas. This will control your blood glucose, improve your health and put your T2D into remission. Have a look at Dr David Unwin's diet sheet and his 2023 conference presentation.

Your tastes may change @oldngrumpy! I eat more variety since diagnosis. Broccoli!!! Used to hate the stuff and now I love it. Your body may be used to eating lots of carbs (mine was) but it's amazing how quickly the cravings go away if you reduce them. Lots of protein and green leafy veg are a good way to go, plus eggs and cheese if you're not a vegan.
You'll find loads of useful advice here, glad you found us!
Best wishes x

Er, aren't eggs and cheese protein then??? 🙄

Yep, but they ain't vegan! I tend to think of them as "extracurricular" :D ie I think of my main protein as meat, fish or veggie substitute with green leafies, and eggs and cheese as extras. TBH, not sure I could have lost 5 stone without them!

Welcome to the forum @oldngrumpy 🙂

10 days before first biood test i was in hospital for 3 weeks they did numerous biood tests and did blood sugars on a daily basis no mention of a problem

Some times it seems results just don’t get passed along, or unusual and ‘out of range’ readings are assumed to be already known about. Plus of course it depends on which tests were being taken, and whether there would have been any overlap with diabetes markers.

It’s pretty common to feel a bit overwhelmed and knocked sideways by your diagnosis. When I was diagnosed in my 20s I’d almost never been ill, and hardly ever set foot in a Drs surgery, let alone a hospital. It was like entering a strange new world!

Be kind to yourself and take things one step at a time. There are literally centuries of lived diabetes experience for you to consult on the forum. So ask away with any questions 🙂

firstly thank you all just grumpy was all ready taken and ime definitely no spring chicken the numbers the doc gave me were 60,68. Definitely not a vegan variety isnt the problem since my partner had a multiple stroke and ime doing the cooking trying new stuff is the best bit ill find substitutes I actually like.I never went docs got to dec 2023 at 65 no regular meds never bin in hospital 5 may 2024 hospital twice and a pharmacy to take each morning. Hope ive replyed to everybody if missed you sorry and if future questions seem simple or silly pleas bear with got allot to learn

If those numbers are HbA1c results, then they are a bit high even for us wrinklys. The diagnosis limit is 48 but that is not some sort of cliff edge. As the number increases it means that the risk of developing long term complications increases and "long tem" becomes less of an issue with age. I'm far wrinlklier than you and am perfectly happy with my HbA1c in the mid 50's and if you can get yours down to those sort of levels then that would be good. Glad to see you are getting into cooking and if you read around the forum you will ideas on the sort of approaches others have used to reducing blood glucose by diet. My only advice is not to be too extreme, the middle ground is likely to work for you. Above all ask questions on here....we have a principle that there is no such thing s a silly question.

Sorry about your partner - I guess that might make you, like me, a carer. I always suggest that carers get in touch with local carer services to see what they can offer in support to make the carer side of your life a bit easier. Carer services are the responsibility of the local county council and some take it far more seriously than others, so it is a bit of a postcode lottery in terms of the service but it is worth checking out.

OOPs.. I see you are posting from Ireland and carer service provision could well be very different to here in the UK.

no my opps vpn on computer let kids setup security way ahead of me on it.Carers do alot but domestic, meds and other stuff she wont let them do down to me 2 years now not to bad have break it up working part time though

@oldngrumpy, I am pretty sure that you will be considered an unpaid carer and if you are in England, you will be entitled to carer support. As I say, support is variable depending on your CC but it is worth a try to see what help is available.

Hi and welcome.

Without wanting to pry and don't feel obliged to do so but what was your hospital admission for and are you on medication like steroids since you mention taking a pharmacy each morning? Just wondering if the reason for your hospital admission or steroids might be the cause of your sudden diabetes, if you were not in diabetic numbers whilst in hospital?

pharmacy probably an exaggeration gone from 0 to what will be 5 furosemide2 bisoprolol 1 metformin 2 and anora ellipta inhaler no steroids went docs with swollen legs blood o2 very low oxy mask and tank ambulance straight to hosp ends up radiological sarcoidosis a lung disease, copd latent from when i used to smoke kicked in by infection ,heart failure general term it was beating to fast.

Oh! Goodness! That must have been worrying! Good that you got sorted promptly though.
Don't think there is anything in that list which might cause elevated BG levels.
It was just a thought...
