Relationship to Diabetes
Gestational
Hi.
I could really do with some advice from people who know about diabetes

Basically ive just had a baby eight weeks ago
I got diagnosed with gdm at 26 weeks
gtt results 11.6

Managed with just diet

After having the baby been getting high s of up to 15

Just the other week it was 15 after fish n chips a small portion

anyway ive had the gtt done at six weeks post natal and it came up as 6.2
Which suprised me and im not sure I trust/ believe it when ive been getting such highs

I tested my own blood as I had to wait a few days for the results
and two hours after the glucose load my machine tested me at 8.7

Now I guess the lab hospital test is way more accurste than a care sens n machine

but when ive had high readings my machine ive tested my husbsnd as we eat the same except I have a smaller portion
and it woll show my bg as 15 but my husbsnds never goes over six
which makes me think it lcant just be that the machine is not accurate as it would say his is higher too.

Also when I hax gdm I had to test one hour after food but I've noticed on here most people test two hours after food
so if I am going to test when should I test two hours after eatting?

Hello whiteandyellowiris, welcome to the forum. So sorry you've got this to cope with as well as a new baby! Having high BG levels are likely to make you feel even more exhausted than just the usual sleep deprivation, so here's a virtual ((((HUG)))). 🙂

Are you breastfeeding? I ask that because the general advice that would work for others trying to control blood glucose via diet might not be appropriate if you're lactating. Either way, I'd suggest that you do a food/test diary for a few days - exactly what you eat, preferably with carb counts, together with readings before and at one and two hours afterwards. Take the readings to the GP and see what he/she says.

Come back and compare the advice you receive to the real life experiences of us here - we're all in the same boat! No question is considered 'silly', so query everything! I only discovered this site several years after diagnosis, and owe my current good readings to the advice I received. Knowledge is power!

Hi, I think you need some specialist advice from your clinic team because gestational diabetes is a special case. Don't forget you are still undergoing massive hormonal changes, as well as having had a recent big weight loss 😉. So I'm guessing your body needs time to settle down. It may well be that without the baby weight your insulin resistance will start coming down and your BG levels will eventually normalise.

LeeLee is right that you shouldn't restrict your diet while breastfeeding, however some foods are more likely to cause a spike in BG levels than others - we do find this with things like fish and chips and French bread. Perhaps better to stick to lower GI carbs. Also, for a person with diabetes it's more useful to test BG two hours after eating, though pregnant women are told to do it after one hour to strive for extremely tight control for the benefit of the unborn baby.

Congratulations btw! 🙂

Hello and welcome !

Blood sugar readings vary all the time, because there's a range of factors which influence them (eg amount of carbs eaten, amount of insulin / oral meds taken, amount of exercise done etc etc) so the fact that the 6 week post natal reading was different to the one taken a home does not really mean anything - In fact I would expect them to be different !

You also asked about whether you need to test at 1 hour post meal as people here talk another testing after 2 hours. I am a type 1 so can only comment from my perspective - when you're Pregnant or trying to get pregnant it's very important to have very very tight control (ie as close to a non diabetic as possible). The time / action profile of insulin typically peaks after 2 hours (this varies depending on the individual) so they ask you to test after one hour post meal and be less than 7.5 mmol because our levels would then drop after that (ie after your insulin kicks in). So Essentially your highest "peak" would be 7.5 . Obviously your not on insulin but I would expect the principles and guidelines for GD and Type 2 to be the same - the only difference being that for me to get to less than 7.5 I'd need insulin, type 2s would need tablets and GDs would need to be vigilant about their diet.
I hope that makes sense ? Am In a bit of a rush so need to sign off - but if you want to chat please feel free to PM me !
One last thing - talk to your dr / GP - I think you should be getting some support for e situation that you're in
Xxx

Hi thanks for the replies
So kind of you to take the time

Sorry I didn't reply back sooner but the baby has been poorly with a temp and a cough

Yes I will take my blood tests two hours after meals from now on then

I am breast feeding so I suppose I better not restrict my food too much

I'm five foot four and pre pregnancy weighed 10 stone 2 which was a bmi of 24
Now I'm nine stone
Actually lost weight during the pregnancy
So my bmi is 21.6
So I don't think I have a weight issue or weight to lose really
Although My tummy isn't the greatest to after a c section

I guess I'm just worried something's not right and it won't get picked up and managed and I could be causing all sorts of damage to my body

Just to sort of clarify
When I had the gtt at the hospital
I took my bg machine with me and tested myself
And that's when my results said 8.7 two hours after food

But the hospital test result came back as 6.2
Which is normal

So me don't understand why I'm still testing so high on my machine
And I don't think it's a faulty machine as my husbands never goes above six

They didn't do a fingerprick test at the hospital before and at least once if not twice, after the glucose drink?

I only ask because it was my belief that they shouldn't diagnose diabetes based on the other blood test they do for diabetes (called an HbA1c test)

Further to the breastfeeding it was my understanding that for T1s at least, b/f actually causes mum's BG to dip low and often causes hypos !

It's very curious ......

The hospital did not do a finger prick test at all when I went for the gtt

They did three blood tests drawing blood from the vein in my arm

I did a ginger prick test as I was impatient to know the results as the hospital post the results out to you

My hood glocouse test machine said 8.7 at two hours after
The hospital result dame back as 6.2

Well I'd go to your GP again and say exactly what you've told us, not only what your meter said at the time of the OGTT, but also post meal readings.

Keep a diary of what you ate, not just 'egg and chips' - weigh the chips or spuds or bread, anything with carb - and calculate the grams of carb in each meal - people on here will help you do that as most of us have various books etc we can look it up in, if you don't.

Ok great thank will follow your advice

And keep a diary and keep checking my bg
But I will do it two hours after eating

Thanks so much for the help

So nice to talk to people who just get it xxx

Oh because I will need to buy my own test strips I think care sens n are twelve pounds
On spirt website

But wondering is there anywhere I can get them cheaper?

Well two hours after eating Alpen
I think a 40g portion

My bg has just tested 4.9
Which is great as only a couple of weeks ago that would have made my bg go up to almost 15
One hour after eating

Only difference is testing two hours later
