Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Well after finally going to the docs' received my results on Friday and been diagnosed with Type 2. Not been put on any medication yet; but started my diet; got my patches to stop smoking and going to start exercising more.

I am waiting on an appt for the diabetic clinic but in the meantime I need some help ----

What does one do when the drowsiness hits? It usually starts shortly after eating and can last for at least an hour; but when you are at work you can't really put your head on your desk and go to sleep! So its a struggle to keep myself awake.....otherwise could end up with a bump on my head as it hits the desk or keyboard.

Any suggestions on what I can take......to combat this.

Many thanks 🙂

Basically get your numbers down. Which means attention to diet.

Check out the links page for T2s in the stickie at the top of this section.

When you say "diet", what do you mean ? Do you understand that it is carbohydrates you can no longer handle and will have to watch carefully portion sizes of things like bread, rice, pasta, potatoes.
Have they advised you to follow a Low GI, Mediterranean style diet ?

Ask to go on T2 newbies course such as Desmond or preferably X-Pert.

Hahahah i remember those days well... I went into the office to do some paperwork and my staff woke me up 3 hours later, dribble all over my top, in a deep deep sleep with my feet on the safe

hahahahah

hi welcome to the forum ...you probably are feeling tired because of the diabetes ....its a classic symptom... hopefully once you start to get better control and work out what is causing your sugars to rise and make the necessary adjustments to your diet ...then you will feel better
have a good look around the forum ...and remember no question is ever regarded as silly here x good luck🙂

Hi LadyG, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Try not to worry though, there is plenty of help available and treatments can be very effective. I'd recommend you take a look at the Useful Links post:

http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=10406

There are some good suggestions there for things to read up on, plus book recommendations (Gretchen Becker's book is considered essential reading!). You'll also find book recommendations for the GL diet - this is considered one of the best approaches to take for diabetics, as it teaches you about the best food combinations to produce stable blood sugar levels by releasing the energy from food at a slow and steady rate into the bloodstream. This may help you with the drowsiness after eating - it may be that the food you are currently eating is releasing its energy too quickly and causing your blood sugar levels to climb too high, then drop quickly again.

Good news about stopping smoking, that is one of the best things you can do for your health, especially with diabetes. Do you have a blood glucose meter? If not do ask your doctor or nurse for one and some test strips. They may be reluctant to prescribe them as they are expensive, but read Jennifer's advice and Maggie Davey's letter (see Useful Links) and you will understand the reasons why testing is the only effective way to determine how to adjust your diet.

Avoid white flour products and go for seeded bread and wholemeal pasta etc., and oats/porridge are generally good. If you have any questions, please ask - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Please

Many thanks for the advice, I will certainly check out the links suggested. All I was given at the time of diagnosis was a booklet and told watch what you eat (cut out the rubbish) as you'll need to lose weight (tell me something I don't know) and you're in the system to get an appt at the local diabetic clinic to get more advice and where to go from here; nothing like leaving you in limbo eh!!

Unfortunately, that's often par for the course :( We can help you with stuff though. There can be a lot to take in, so try not to become overwhelmed by everything. You can't change everything overnight, so absorb what you can and ask questions as you go. 🙂

Welcome to the forum. Hope we can help you aong the way 🙂

Welcome to the forum LadyG xx

Hi LadyG and welcome to the forum 🙂

The tiredness could very well be a sign that your blood sugar is high - lethargy is a common symptom.

Looking on the positive side, when you start to get your sugars under control, you'll feel like a new person.

Joining this forum is an excellent intro into the why's and wherefor's of diabetes and you can benefit from the experiences of many people in a similar position to yourself.

If the stories of other T2's are anything to go by, you will need to demand appropriate care from your medical teams - this forum will give you plenty of ammo to use in your battles with them.

Good luck. :D

Many thanks for your good wishes...I have to say I have learnt more from this forum in a couple of hours than reading the pamphlet given to me at the doctors. Hopefully once I get my appt thru for the clinic things will be even more clearer - don't even know what my BG level is at the moment; so will take things easy; watch what I eat and jot down any peaks and troughs as to how I'm feeling until then and of course keep looking at the forum for tips and ideas..... 🙂

welcome to the forum LadyG 🙂 I was only diagnosed in January and I remember before diagnosis how I could fall asleep on a washing line🙄 don't worry.... you will soon get the hang of it..... just take it one day at a time.... and ask ask ask :D
