Hello all
My husband has just been diagnosed type 1 diabetes after having type 2 for about 10 years. He is a window cleaner and as such doesn't have access to microwaves etc during the day. He works 8-10 hours a day depending on the seasons and walks 13,000 steps a day usually up and down the ladder. We are desperate for someone to help us with food he can have during the day that will sustain him. A handful of blueberries and a handful of nuts wont really sustain him.
Please help me, I am at my wits end. I'm currently ploughing through pages and websites for inspiration but its getting a blur now

hello M, I just thought I would reply so that you wouldn't think you had been forgotten. I am so sorry but I am unable to answer your question, but I am sure one of the more experienced members will be along soon to offer you advice. x

You need a food thermos so he can take something with him. Just make extra portions of whatever he’d normally eat, they keep food hot for hours.

Hi, @M.Beeds, welcome to the forum.

Could you tell us a bit more about your husband's situation, eg, how come he was originally diagnosed as type 2, is he on medication, does he know what his blood glucose levels are? We can then better answer your questions 🙂 xx

Welcome to the forum. What insulin regime is your husband on? What does he normally like to eat?
Also, did the Dr / hospital say he had been wrongly diagnosed type 2? How did this new diagnosis come about?
Sorry for all the questions - will help us best advise you 🙂

Welcome M.Beeds

Following on from Pine Martin:
- Can you also tell us how the diagnosis was changed from T1 to T2.
- What insulins is he using, and how does he manage this?
- Is he in the hands of your GP Practice or a specialist team at the hospital?

More info will help us to provide appropriate support.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry I’m confused with the types tbh. He is a type 2 with insulin!! It’s only just happened and my heads in a spin. He was on metformin and glicazide but his levels went off the scale so they’ve given him insulin today. The main problem is sustaining his energy during the day.

Thanks, M.Beeds. I'm type 2 but not on insulin so hopefully others will turn up with more advice regarding that.

As for snacks during the day, can he take a lunchbox with him, with things like chicken drumsticks, good quality sausages (like the Heck brand), cheese, hard boiled eggs, possibly things like falafels? If you have a look at the Food & recipes thread you should find some suitable things, or the What did you eat yesterday? thread.

Thank you I’ll take a look

Does he have access to a dietician?

Has your husband been eating a low carb diet?
It is surprisingly sustaining, but there still remains the 'carbs give you energy' mantra.
Blueberries are often a high carb food - it depends on the origin, but there are lower carb choices.
Starting the day with bacon and eggs, or even an old fashioned breakfast such as chops and a stirfry should give a good start (particularly if his insulin resistance is high in the mornings, like mine.
During the day access to a microwave would not help much - a flask of coffee and a supply of thick cream to put in it is something I found a great help, but cooked sausages, cheese, tomatoes and nuts, some left over cold meat, boiled eggs have all got me through time away from home for up to two whole days.
