Hi ,I'm new here although had type 2 for a few years now .Hope you all have a good day

Morning Lemmy, welcome to the forum. What brings you here? How's your diabetes going, are you doing ok? Hope you're having a good day too, Sarah

Hi Sarah ,Apparently my type 2 is doing OK. I take 4 metformin a day but my nurse wanted me to also take one more tablet to bring it down to normal ,Forxiga.Just wondered if there's opinions on this tablet? I started yesterday and felt bit weird on it .It doesn't read well on sires online ..

Hi @Lemmy. Welcome to the forum.
How much attention are you paying to your diet, it could be that over time your carbohydrate intake has crept up and the metformin whilst it can help is not as powerful as the dietary regime you are following.
You should perhaps re-evaluate the amount of carbohydrates you are having and look to reducing them. Those who take a low carbohydrate approach will have no more than 130g per day and many somewhat less.
This link may give you some ideas where changes could be made. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
What is your HbA1C that has prompted your nurse to want to add the extra meds.

HbA1ç was 56. I dont have that many carbs anyway .A lot of what I eat is low fat or no sugar as vegan .

Your HbA1C doesn't seem desperately high, and many people at that level would not even be on metformin using diet alone to bring level down. But if you are having few carbs and the HbA1C is not coming down then that may be why the additional meds are suggested.
What sort of meals do you have to keep your carbs low.

I have quorn ,salads, veg ,odd jacket potatoes
Tofu is also pretty low carb, you could try butternut squash or celeriac as an alternative to potatoes. Edamame or blackbean pasta is also low carb to give you a bit more variety.

Helluva lot of carbs in a jacket spud unfortunately - and then of course should you decide to have baked beans with it, you increase the carb whilst adding very little of anything else. Don't concentrate on low sugar - sugar is merely another carb and it is ALL carb that affects blood glucose. Usually, pulses eg peas and beans are fairly high carb so if you're getting a lot of your protein from pulses, you're potentially making things very difficult for yourself. As protein is essential to life and carbohydrate is not - my omnivorous brain automatically asks why anyone with diabetes would wish to restrict their choices?

I dont have a jacket potatoe very often and wouldn't have baked beans with it .I restrict my choices because of my beliefs in not eating animals !

Welcome to the forum @Lemmy

It’s perfectly possible to have a diabetes-friendly vegan menu, though it may take some lateral thinking and creativity 🙂

There’s a meal planner from Diabetes UK that might give you a few ideas here:

But as with all menu suggestions, you’d have to bear in mind that responses to different foods are very individual, and it can be tricky to know exactly how any one person will tolerate various sources and portions of carbohydrates.

If you have access to a BG meter you can find this out for yourself by checking immediately before eating and again 2hrs after the first bite of the meal. Ideally you’d want your BG to only have risen by 2-3mmol/L by the 2hr mark.

Once you can see how you react to various staples (eg different sorts of pulses) you can build up a wide and varied repertoire.

We eat quite a lot of vegan and flexi meals, with mushrooms and mycoproteins along with lentils and various pulses doing a great job of carrying the flavours 🙂

Hey, @Lemmy welcome to the forum! If there is anything you would like to ask, please feel free to respond! We are happy to help in whatever way we can 🙂

I'm always in two minds about animals and suffering generally knowing as I have done for 50 years, that I most likely wouldn't be alive now had it not been for Messrs Banting, Best and McLean experimenting on dogs 100 years ago in Canada. I cannot believe that they didn't suffer.

Hello and welcome @Lemmy 🙂
