Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everybody.

I was diagnosed with T1 early last year. its been a long 18 months but I feel I am ready to talk about it more now.

Just found out today that i actually have haemochromatosis which I guess makes my diabetes secondary rather than T1

would be interested to talk with people in a similar position.

Welcome @Smsmith70 🙂 Yes, the first months of diabetes are very hard. Lots of emotions to work through as well as the practical stuff. Are you on injections?

I think @Christy has haemochromatosis but is Type 2. There are other people too here so you’re not alone.

Welcome to the forum @Smsmith70

Glad you are feeling more able to talk about your diabetes now. It can be a very isolating condition, and it can really help to have others around you who understand the daily struggles, and instinctively 'get it'.

We have a few members for whom diabetes is just a bit of an 'added extra' so you are in good company here. 🙂

Thanks Inka - yes I am an insulin user. Tresiba and Fiasp. After in vitable early struggles, mentally and professionally I thought I had got my head around everything. I was on a better insulin combo for me, my control was good and I was lucky to have funded Libre 2. I had accepted that diabetes was the central fact of my life.
Then today I am told there is a 1 in 3 chance that treatment for Haemochromatosis will reverse my diabetes to the point I will not be insulin dependent. Struggling to process it really.

Wow - that is mind blowing! I didn’t realise that was the case. Those are good odds 🙂
I’ve had Type 1 for almost 30 years and a pump for most of those years, but there are people here who’ve had it decades longer than me.

Hi @Smsmith70 and welcome. @Inka Is correct in that I'm type 2 with haemochromatosis. Neither conditions are causing many issues currently so I'm very lucky. Not sure I can help you but happy to answer any questions. I would really advise you join the Haemochromatosis UK charity if you haven't already. They provide great info and support.

Hi @Smsmith70 - I have been told my ferritin levels were high so am going for a further blood test in a couple of weeks. I had an uncle with haemochromatosis so it may be that I will be diagnosed with it too. Hope you get on OK.
