At risk of diabetes
Hello all. I Was shocked by my diabetic diagnosis last summer, but managed to bring levels down after an initial 3 month grace period to be told i was then in the 'pre-diabetic' range, hooray i thought, I can work with that. However, Christmas arrived and got in the way and most of my good work flew out the window and on repeat visit 2 weeks ago im told again iv'e just nudged back into the diabetic band. Its a bit of a roller coaster for me at the moment and im trying very hard not to be discouraged by my lack of will power over the mince pies!. Couple this with my recent visit to the asthma clinic for my annual check up, and im told my BP is higher than expected. So now I have to do a week long monitor for that! When I found this site I was encouraged by the posts i saw here, so I decided to join up. And am looking forward to reading everyone's stories. Im glad you're there with me.

Welcome Tee G, you’ve come to the right place for encouragement, information and friendly helpful people. I was a bit naughty at Christmas too, but have now got back into watching what I eat. You did it before, which is fantastic. I’ve yet to do it, but am hoping to do so, as I was 50 on diagnosis last October, so fingers crossed. Don’t get discouraged, it will happen for you again, I don’t doubt it. 🙂

Hi tee
Welcome aboard, hopefully you’ll find it helpful here. We’re a nice bunch and it often helps to talk to people who know how you feel 🙂

Hi @Tee G
As you don’t have a diagnosis, I suspect you may be T2, as a T2 diabetic we have trouble dealing with carbohydrates, let’s start with the simple sugars found in anything sweet like cakes, biscuits, sweets, choc bars etc. but not only these we need to limit the more complex starches which our bodies readily break down into sugars the Starchy foods include peas, corn, potatoes, beans, pasta, rice and grains. Starchesare a more concentrated source of carbohydrates and calories than fruits, nonstarchy vegetables and dairy, but many of them are excellent sources of fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients..
However our bodies as diabetics struggle to deal with them, so need to limit these in our diet, a good place to start is Maggie Daveys Letter ( link below) and feel free to ask any questions as someone here will know the answer
Regards
M.

Welcome to the forum @Tee G

Well done for reducing your BG levels before. Was that just by cutting out sweet things? Or did you make more widescale changes?

You’ll find lots of friendly experienced folks here to compare notes with 🙂

Hi there, thanks so much for the kind words, wisdom and info. Ive already scanned many threads and open letters on here, they're all very useful. I just feel a bit overwhelmed by it all i guess. Like many people before me, thinking diabetes is all about the obvious sugars, the cakes and biscuits, and now I know its not! Its far more complicated than that. As @Martin9 says its just as much about the carbs. But im slowly learning. I didnt and dont find it hard to give up the sweets and chocolate and things like that, I never had much of a very sweet tooth anyway. My trouble is the other stuff. And ive been eating wholegrain and fresh veg for years, all home cooked and no junk foods, I thought I was doing well. But like you all, im sure I will get to grips with whats in and whats out. Thanks again guys.

Yes @everydayupsanddowns Initially I was told to cut out all obvious sugars, which I did with some ease, and got a good follow up result, but time went on and Xmas arrived and i got sloppy and was a bit bad with sticking to what i was told to do. And it soon showed with the latest result. I would say though, it taught me a valuable lesson and spurred me on so im back on track again now, and making more alterations to the carbs im eating and looking at portion control too. And p.s. Had a good clear out of the pantry of any obvious jams etc etc and i threw out the tomato sauce too LOL 😛
