Hi , it has taken a while for me to find this site, everybody seems helpful and non judgemental whatever the problems. I was diagnosed with type 1 ten years ago now and have tried to muddle through. I have had foot problems steming from going undiagnosed for at least a year.
I have just been told that retinopathy has started and am terrified. Have tried to carry on as normal and havent told many people but one of them said well you should have controlled your levels better. I have just had the best HBA1c ever and cholestrol levels are only .7 over yet my doctor was horrible to me and just said i should try harder.
I am waiting for the appointment at the hospital and dont know wether to transfer all of my care there.
I was so pleased with my results and he just destroyed all that. Have made a real effort to lose weight and try harder but feel really down now. He wonders why my blood pressure is through the roof whenever he checks it!!
Thanks for reading maree

Hi Maree and welcome to the forum hun, ohh what an awful person to say that to you , those kind of people are not even worth 1 second of your day , dont you worry everyone in here is kind and caring and would never be so cruel thats what we are here for to help one and all,was the person who said you should have controlled your levels better diabetic? if so he should have more sense if not he has no idea the daily struggles us diabetics go through with our levels.

As for your doctor how sad someone in a position such as his was so flippent to just say try harder, maybe he should try harder to find some tact.Dont you let these small minded people make you feel bad Maree.

Hi maree, welcome to the forum 🙂 What a stupid doctor! Why on earth they can't be encouraging instead of nasty is beyond me. Don't let this person spoil your delight at your HbA1c - well done!

Retinopathy is scary - did they give you a description to explain the level they have found? I was told last year that I have 'background retinopathy' which can resolve itself as long as I keep my levels good. Ignore the person who said it was your fault - do they have diabetes and know how hard it is sometimes? Does this person think we want to get problems? Also, if your cholesterol is only 0.7 higher than they would like it's not a disaster. Are you taking statins?

You're among friends here Maree, so I am pleased that you found us - we will do all we can to help you! 🙂

Hi Maree,

welcome to the forum.

I can only echo what Steff and Northerner have already said.

I've only been on this forum for a few weeks and I can't believe the lack of understanding support that people get from their doctors and other members of their support team. I'm lucky in that my GP, Diabetes consultants and DSN are all very helpful and supportive.

Try not too worry about your retinopathy until you have seen the consultant about it. As Northerner said, background retinopathy can resolve itself with good control. I've had proliferative retinopathy and have had extensive laser treatment. It has now settled down and I've not had any problems for a couple of years.

As Steff and Northerner have said, you've come to the right place and will get all the support you need here from people who understand what you are going through.

Keith.

hi Maree welcome to the forum i thought that T1 are always looked after by the hospitial wheras T2 get the GP and Nurse ?? good luck xx

Hello Maree, welcome to the forum from me too.

My BP is always a little elevated when tested by whoever! I bought one for home use and it is invariably less than 130/85. So either I'm more relaxed at home or my bp meter is rubbish! 🙂

HelloAM64 i get looked after by a nice diabetic nurse at my doctors. I used to go to the hospital but i asked if i could go to my doctors as i didn't have any major problems. It's much better, maybe other type 1's could ask at their local hospital too. sheena

Welcome Maree I do think if the people we had to see had the same condition as us they would be a 100 times more supportive. Take no notice you are doing your best and doing really well. good luck and take care Sheenax

Hi Maree, welcome to the forum.

Hi Maree,

Welcome to the forum. I can't believe how unhelpful your doctor was he should be encouraging you not making you feel terrible. I think your doing the right thing with thinking about moving your care diabetes wise to your local hospital - I go to my local hospital for mine and they are brilliant the doctors at my pratice don't really have a clue about diabetes. xx

hi
thanks for all your kind messages. my so called friend has a daughter with diabetes that controls hers perfectly(she has no kids and doesntdrive so runs hers very low). I still havent had an appointment for my eyes but i am scared of my sight going. the letter wasnt very clear but said that there were signs of retinopathy and macular degeneration. i read lots of the forum before joining and could see how supportive people have been to other members. hope you all have a great easter break
thanks

Some Doctors make me so mad. Do they not realise that encouragement works so much better than a telling off. You should be really pleased with the hba1c result, any improvement is going to help your health.

With regards to the blood pressure, at 1 point I always had high readings at the clinic, they gave me a monitor to where for 24hrs to check if it was just the stress of the clinic making it high and it was, it was fine the rest of the time.
