Type 2
Just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself.
I am 65yrs of age, disabled through arthritis and can only walk a few steps.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 about 2 years ago but about 2 months ago following my annual checkup it was found that my bg level had gone up. I think it was about 74, not 100% certain though.
Anyway I was put on metformin one a day for 5 days then 2 per day but it caused me terrific side effects, nausea and diarrhea, I took the medication for a month but had to go back to my GP so I was then prescribed the modified format. I still have some of the side effects but not so bad. I have lost over 4kg since starting on the medication, I am sure this is down to the side effects as I haven't changed my diet very much and I cant exercise much. Can anyone say if these side effects will lessen or go away when I get used to the medication
I have read on the forum about people with type 2 being given glucose monitors but I haven't been given one, do you only get given one if your bg level is a lot higher than mine or has this been an oversight by my GP/nurse?

Metformin does aid with losing weight for some. Some people find if the reduce the amount of carbhydrates they eat the side affects reduce. Also taking it with food helps.
Most Type 2 don't get issued with meters and then have strips limited.

Hello Maureen. My sister was given a monitor back in the day but my other sister and me, diagnosed recently, haven't been given anything apart from an appointment to attend a lecture on diabetes. I think we're supposed to buy our own now the NHS is in dire straits.

There is a meter called Code Free that is the cheapest around I am sure someone will post the link or do a forum search of Code Free.
