I was diagnosed with type 2 three years ago at first it was every six months i had a review now it's once a year. Jut had my review everything was fine all levels where better than last year.My medication is Metaformin 500mg twice a day rampril 2.5mg one a day, zantac for bloated stomach and astrostatin 40mg at night.

My alcohol consumption has gone from twice a week to once a week on Saturday evening even the it's only 4 to five cans of lager over a four hour period. after going to bed i have three hours sleep and the i wake up and cannot get back to sleep, this morning i was awake at 4.0am and managed to have a snooze from 8.30 to 9.15 i am shattered now and it takes about three days to get back to normal.

When i was diagnosed the doctor was more worried about my smoking than my drinking because i told him how much i drank.

Any advice please as i look forward to drink on Saturday evening

excuse the spelling as i'm tired

Hi Bob, welcome to the forum 🙂 Is it just on the nights when you have a drink that you have problems? Alcohol can send you off to sleep fairly quickly, but you're not getting the best kind of deep sleep and this can lead to waking and not being able to sleep again even though you are very tired. Are you still smoking? This can impair your breathing as you sleep, as can the alcohol, so the two combined might be causing problems. What you are drinking doesn't sound excessive though. Have you discussed the problem with your doctor? I think people are advised not to drink when taking metformin, but I know a lot of people do without any ill-effects.

Hi Bob, I've been on metformin for about 18 months. I only rarely have a drink these days, partly because of monster hangovers. I never linked them to metformin before, but thinking back that could around the time the hangovers became truly horrible. On the other hand, it could be my age catching up with me! :D

Thanks for the replies:

I am still smoking but cut it down to half, a 50g of tobacco lasts me for over a week.

The doctor's don't want to know mentioned a few times and they are not worried about the amount i drink and probably not related they say.

As for the hangovers i don't get them just tired through lack of sleep not feeling rough at all

Welcome to the forum Bob 🙂

Might be worth trying a dry weekend to see if it is really the alcohol causing the problem or if there is some other reason.

Have your Vitamin B12 levels been tested?

Is the B12 automatically done in the diabetic review blood test

I've never had them done - so not as far as I know.

Not wanting to be a wiki doctor 😱 and I have no medical training but, I'm aware that B12 issues are a known side effect with longer term Metformin use.

If i were you i would change from Lager to brown beer. To many chemicals in some lager. Give it a try Bob. 🙂

Thanks for your help everybody, will get in touch with doctors tomorrow about B12 off to bed now i am shattered
