Hi all,
I have been a T1 since 1995 (almost 20 years!!) so think its about time I joined a forum like this one 🙂.

I am hoping to 'meet' others in a similar situation, who can relate to the daily issues T1s have to deal with, and I'm hoping to learn new ways of managing my T1. I accept my diabetes, because I know its never going to "go away", but sometimes I wish I could get a day off!! 🙂 I am currently going through the delightful pre-conception phase (hard work!) but have recently been on a very helpful DAFNE course, and I'm hoping I can learn more about how to manage the pre conception phase from the women on this forum who have been pregnant and / or the ones who are trying.

Take care, and look forward to hearing from you!

Welcome to the forum Cleo 🙂

Hi Cleo, welcome to the forum 🙂 I think you will find there are people here who will be able to help with everything you have mentioned! What insulin regime are you on? Any particular problems?

Hi Mark T and Northerner,
Many thanks for your welcome..
I am on a split dose of Lantus (8 u in the morning and 10 u before bed) and then Novorapid before meals. I'm carb counting so dose depends on food and my fasting BGs. I was advised to split my Lantus dose around Christmas because taking it at night wasnt really working very well. Thats all been going well and I've been waking up with respectable BGs and no hypos at night (great!!). This week however I've had 2 hypos usually around 4am. I am going to the gym 3- 4 times a week (evening classes) so it might have something to do with that. The Novorapid situation is OK, my morning, lunch and evening carb ratio to insuling ratio is 1 : 1.5. I think the biggest thing I struggle with is managing by BGs when excersizing....usually when I am finished with a class I'm up in the double figures!!! very annoying....but am sure I'll get the hang of it 🙂

Exercise is difficult to deal with as it can vary so much from person to person. Some people find they don't need any insulin or they will drop through the floor, whereas I hardly drop at all during exercise and am morelikely to rise, like you. I find I have to be careful about timing my insulin and food prior to a run or I will go too high, yet if I do other exercises, like a few crunches etc. then my levels fall almost straight away! Sometimes, having the same insulin and food on a non-exercise day results in my levels being lower! I find the effects of exercise can last for up to 40 hours in terms of making me much more insulin sensitive. Tricky business! 😱 I found the book Diabetic Athlete's Handbook useful in understanding the processes and strategies involved (not just for olympians! 🙂)

Cleo hi and a warm welcome to the forum.

Thanks Steff 🙂
Northerner : thanks for the suggestions - Yes I think my tendency / pattern is to go high during exercise. Will def have a look on Amazon for the book!

Welcome Cleo. I can't offer you much by way of experience, being a T2 (relatively) old biddy, but wish you every success in achieving you dreams. 🙂
