Just wanted to say hello! I have a son who was diagnosed with type 1 3years ago at age 6, and I can't believe I've just come across this site! Nice to meet you all and share advice/encouragement.

Angela

Hi Angela, welcome to the forum 🙂 How is your son doing? Is he on a pump or injections? I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi and welcome from me 🙂

Pleased you came across this forum eventually - lol, look forward to seeing you posting and hope all is ok 🙂

Thank you both 🙂
He is on injections. The pump has always scared him a bit, will be nice to read some responses to it on here. Hopefully he might come round to the idea. At the moment he is doing really well on NovoMix 30. So far so good.

Welcome to the forum from a fellow newby Angela! I've only been on here for a few days, but I've already learned so much. I'm sure you'll find something on here to answer any questions you have.

Thanks a lot. Yeah, answering questions already. Really is a great site. Thanks for the welcome. Hope you are doing well.

Good to hear he is doing well on the mix. Does this affect the flexibility of his eating patterns though? Have you considered basal/bolus (MDI)?

Have you got a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas? I've found it invaluable since my diagnosis (and I was diagnosed at 49! 😱)

His eating patterns are very routined and sometimes when we are out for meals etc or if he is at a party where lunch will be later than normal we do have to keep an eye on him. It can also get him a bit annoyed if I'm honest. But this is pretty rare. We did speak to his nurse about MDI but my son isn't keen on more injections even if it does mean better flexibility. It is hard at the moment to get him to speak about it with me, just wants to stay as things are and that is that. His readings are always very good so he doesn't see the benefits as such like my husband and I do. I'm sure his mind will change as he gets a bit older and wants a bit more freedom. I'm also going to get him to look through this forum with me. I think sometimes he feels very alone with it.

I've not seen that book, thanks a lot. I will look it up!

Well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! 🙂 The book is quite expensive, but covers everything really well and might help you 'look ahead' to things he will encounter as he grows older 🙂

I think your son might like to join The Insulin Gang, a forum like this one but set up a couple of years ago by a girl who was nine years old at the time, because she felt alone and left-out and wanted to share experiences with others.
