Hi All, recently diagnosed with Diabetes and trying to get my head round it.

Started feeling thirsty all the time and tired so got my blood sugar tested at my local chemist and came back with a result of 15.4 lol

Got refered to a doc who originally thought type 2 but then found high ketones in my urine so now being treated for type 1

Using Humulin M3 at the moment and blood sugar still all over the place hopefully will settle down soon.

Anyway im off to read these interesting forums.

Hi there RH welcome to this wonderful forum.

Hi and welcome to the forum. This is one for the best places for information, support, understanding and the odd bit of humour. Ask any questions that you have, please ask. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience here for you to share. Hope you are not feeling overwhelmed by all that you are being taught right now.

Take care,
Ange

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm guessing that the doctor went for Type2 initially because of your age - some GPs refuse to believe that an adult can be Type 1, believe it or not! Good to hear that they came to the correct diagnosis and that you are getting appropriate treatment. Having said that, I am surprised that you have been put on a mixed insulin. It's thought that the most flexible injection regime is with a basal-bolus regime, also known as MDI (Multiple Daily Injections). With this you have more control as you take a slow-acting insulin (the basal) which lasts for around 24 hours and then fast-acting insulin (the bolus) with your food, calculating the dose accordig to the amount of carbohydrate in your meals. With a mixed insulin you have to 'feed the insulin', eating at the times it peaks and always eating enough carbs to counteract the insulin. With MDI you can choose to eat when you want, and what you want (within reason!). I'd recommend asking your doctor or nurse about it.

I'd highly recommend getting hold of a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1. Well, maybe not everything, but for those things it doesn't, you have us! 🙂 There is a lot to learn, but you will get there! Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we'll do our best to help you 🙂

Thanks for the replies and thanks Northerner for explaining the different insulin types (didnt know about the other one) I think im on the Humulin just to get used to injecting etc, that said i am struggling with it a bit, blood sugar seems to be hovering around the 15 to 19 mark regardless, am being very careful what i eat and at the right time. Perhaps im not eating the right things or enough. All questions for my Diabetes specialist when I next speak to her.

Diabetes can be quite an individual thing so it is mostly a case of discovering how different foods affect you by using your meter to check your levels after eating. A lot of people find that the GL (Glycaemic Load) diet is the best type of diet to follow as it is a method of combining foods that release their glucose slowly into the blood. There are reviews of a couple of good books on the subject here:
