Hi guys,

I recently got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, however after learning of symptoms I suspect it’s gone 3 ish years undiagnosed. A bit of a shock at first obviously but I do feel it’s a wake up call I needed.

My mum has type 2 also which has been quite helpful in terms of advise. Also to my diabetes nurses surprise, my mum has been prescribed a blood sugar 2 week monitor. My mum set me up with one and it was incredibly helpful. I learn more and more about what I can and can’t eat and feel it’s mental they can’t prescribe that to all diabetics. None the less I’ll try get another when I have money.

I guess I am a bit anxious about the neuropathy I’ve been having in my hands and feet for a few years and a bit of erectile disfunction. I found that it is improving a bit with blood sugar control but my diabetes nurse seems very take back when I told her. I’m 34…her response was “ you’ve been getting neuropathy already”

She was then very postive about how I can live a healthy life but that startled me a bit.

Just wanted to reach out really. If I can offer my experiences, when I’ve got a bit of skin in the game then community is great! Also just wanted to know if anyone had some positive experiences of managing to recover nerve damage and stuff. Any experience is welcome obviously!

Much love guys

Welcome to the forum @Samiguel90

Sorry you have to be here, but glad you’ve joined us 🙂

Sorry to hear you’ve been getting some changes in sensation in hands and feet.

There are some forms of neuropathy that can improve and reduce over time with more stable and in-range glucose levels. Good to hear you were able to use what sounds like a Libre2 to identify some meals and foods which were raising your BG levels. A more cost-effective method that many on the forum who need to self-fund choose is a fingerstick BG meter with affordable strips. Some of the cheapest ones are a bit dodgy, but the Spirit Tee 2 and Contour Blue have a good reputation here.

You can take a reading immediately before a meal, and again 2hrs after the first bite to check the ‘meal rise’ from the combination of foods. Mostly it will be the carbohydrates in your meals that raise your BG levels, so things like rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits - plus sugar too, of course. Getting the portion-size right of those elements in your meals is a really powerful strategy. Then adding in protein, healthy fats, and low-carb veggies to keep things interesting and satisfying. Aiming for a meal rise of 2-3mmol/L or less, and ultimately a maximum BG of 8.5mmol/L at the 2hr mark are common benchmarks for T2s here.

Hopefully with improved glucose levels any nerve pain you have been experiencing will either improve or be held steady.

Working on your fitness / activity levels to improve blood flow is worth considering too, as it’s the reduced blood flow that can be behind nerve damage.

Hello and welcome. Glad you've got your mum for advice and support. Are you willing to share your HbA1c on diagnosis, and the medicationas you are prescribed. It will help us make more informed suggestions

Welcome @Samiguel90
As I have Type 1 diabetes, things are a but different for me in terms of management.
However, I have noticed that the Libre are available for a few 2 week trial when you want to give another one a go. You just have to register on their website.
Dexcom also do a free trial. Their app is supported on less phones than the Libre but, if you have a supported phone you could give that a go for 10 days.

Hi sam and welcome to the forum. They are a good bunch of peeps on here full of support. Remember no question to small, large or to silly
Looking forward to getting to know you
