Relationship to Diabetes

Neewbie here,had type 1 diabetes now for 23 yrs,48 now ( ouch ! )
im on Actrapid and Lantis pens.Looking for info on carb diet which is old school,now trying to suss out calorie diets,as i here people are now missing out certain injection times,if not hungry,any help,advice most welome.million and one questions to ask......🙂
 
Paul, ask your diabetes care team to enroll you on a carb counting course such as DAFNE (dose adjustment for normal eating) as soon as one is available. These courses teaches the principles of matching your insulin to the carbs you consume at each meal, and will work out a insulin/carb ratio for you based on each individual meal throughout the day. Toby.
 
Hi Paul, welcome to the forum 🙂 How do you normally calculate your insulin doses? We've had quite a few members join recently who, despite being diagnosed for many years, have never received any education on current 'best practices'. Certainly, if you can get on a DAFNE course then that would be ideal, but even if it is not offered in your area, something along similar lines should be available as PCTs are obliged to provide something.

Another good source of information is Ragnar Hanas' Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults. Don't be put off by the title - I find it invaluable and I was diagnosed aged 49! 🙂

Not heard of skipping meals and counting calories only.

As Northerner said, many of us have never been through the education process for more recent thinking. Ask plenty of questions and you'll find out all you need to know. 🙂

Hi Paul welcome🙂 , i'd look into Dafne liked Toby suggested , i recently done and Dafne course then went on an insulin pump , after having diabetes for 30 years these are the two best things i have done for my diabetes 🙂

Hello to you both this forum is a great support network for us all.......helped me loads and I have only been diagnosed 3 weeks myself
