Hi all

New to the forum, but not to diabetes over 20 years now...

I've been pumping since June 2008, after a 3 year battle with my consultant to get it... But proved in 3 months of using it, that I was right when with what I said was causing my control problems:D

I lead a very active life, with training 2 rescue dogs, and hoping to help out the rescue with home checking and assessing etc..

Hi Ellie and a warm welcome to the forum, some members on here are on pumps and have found it to be the best choice they ever made and im pleased to hear its working for you to, have a good browse around and you will soon see we are a really nice bunch (honest🙂).

p.s Lovley that you train rescue dogs they do such an invaluble job.. Nice to "meet" you x

Hi Ellie, welcome to the forum 🙂 Congratulations on getting the pump, shame you should have to battle for it. In the US the insurance companies recognise it's better for control, so why not here? It will be nice to hear of your experiences, and perhaps you'll learn a bit from us too! 🙂

Hi Ellie,

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum Ellie.

Really interesting to hear that you train rescue dogs. It must be a very rewarding job?

Andy 🙂

Thanyou for your welcome

When I spoke to my DSN at the 2004 about pumping, she sucked the air back through her teeth, and utter that pumps where I live are as rare as hen's teeth! And very much doubted I would get one, but she would start the ball rolling with a referal to the pump consultant and a word..

I am very sentive to insulin, so only need very small amounts for control, combined with a very flutuating basal line to contol.. DP dreadfull, and the a roller coaster.. So to maintain tight control was a nightmare, even splitting my levimer didn't really help... One little miscalcuation with timing of food/injection or carb count, my BG would either dump or rocket!

And yes, rescue is very rewarding indeed...

My two are brillient, and to think that a year ago my older one was a complete nervous wreck, and agoraphobic is pretty unbelievable now, a year of hard work he soo chilled..

My German Shepherd pup, she 9 month's I adopted her when she was 5 1/2 months old, totally untrained and unsocialised, she coming on fantastically with training etc.. And she has a brillient talent indeed, she is my hypo warner, she's able to wake me up if I start to hypo at night, a cold wet nose in the face, if no wake, then pawed and now she's discovered that she can get onto the bed, I get pounced on lol..

Brilliant Ellie! Rescue dogs are often the most loving and characterful of them all 🙂

Hi Ellie

Welcome from me too. Love dogs. Love dogs that do, even more.🙂

Would be interested to hear more about your pumping and the road to getting one. What's your rough location if you don't mind me asking ?

There are a few of us on here who have considered whether to ask for one or not and I'm constantly veering between a definite no and a maybe. But it all depends on being offered one first of course ! :D

I live in Somerset..

I actually asked for one😱

I arranged for my GP to refer me to the pump friendly consultant, on my first visit told him I wanted a pump and why I needed it... He agreed that it was my way forward, then a load of excuses of why I wouldn't get one... I then spent the next couple of years every 3 months, building my case. collecting my data, at each visit I expanded, and pointed out situations where if I had a pump I could avoided etc... They eventually caved in🙂 Then I had to wait 6 months to actually get it though...

Should have seem my consultants face when I asked for one, you thought I had told him about a very top secret that I shouldn't have known about😱

I'm more than happy to point anybody in the right direction as there are people who can help with the toughest of battles, and I'm happy to help guide how to build a case they can't argue with easily...

I've had a life long passion for dogs, I'm privleged that the family dog saved my life when I was a toddler..
