Supporter Care Advisor
Hello everybody! My name's Thomas, I'm a new Supporter Care Advisor at Diabetes UK. The main things you should know about me are:

  1. I'm a huge fan of Nick Cave. My mother went to a gig of his when she was pregnant with me and I've been listening to him religiously ever since. Shout out to any Bad Seeds in the rooms
  2. My favourite writer is Cormac McCarthy. I'm currently reading Blood Meridian and it's gooooood
  3. Almost everything recommended to me on Netflix is described as an "irreverent comedy"
  4. I need to lighten up: writing this list made me think I may not have gotten as far from my teen angst as I'd like to think. Let me know in the comments if you've got any songs, books, or movies you'd recommend to help take life less seriously!

I've heard the name, but never actually listened to any of Nick Cave's music till just now when I scanned through a couple of his videos

HUH! it's depressing!, no wonder you want to take life less seriously - What you need is livening up with a bit of Captain Beefheart or Zappa
Play them loud enough to wake the neighbours in the next city

I could suggest others, though they are mostly Prog Rock from my era, as you might have guessed; but not exclusively, there's Folk such as Steeleye Span & Michael Chapman, and recently I've been listening to swing, and hurdy gurdy music - there's loads of stuff on YouTube, just play around with the search box, links & prompts

Or if you want something quieter but still lively, try Caravan

As for movies - these are two of my favourites - The Straight Story, and Finding Your Feet - you could call them life affirming (I saw that in a review somewhere); and anything by Mel Brooks, especially Blazing Saddles

But I don't do Netflix or anything like that, you'll have to find them yourself

Can't help you much with books as I mostly read non fiction, and Scandi Noir, though I just treat it as a story, and not to be taken too seriously

I second Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink is a fantastic album!

Try the Art Ensemble of Chicago for something a bit... avant garde.

Welcome to the forum @Thomas DUK - glad to have you on board 🙂

Recommended reading - anything by Terry Pratchett. Pure escapism and hilariously funny. Just the 35 books. Or, the Brentford trilogy, obviously there are by now 11 books comprising this series.

Fellow Bad Seeds fan waving frantically over here!! Have to say I'm not so familiar with NC's most recent stuff, the last album of his I got that I really liked was Push The Sky Away. Didn't really care for the Grinderman stuff. But love The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party and early Bad Seeds stuff, basically been a fan since they first hit the UK in the early 80s. In fact, the band my first husband was in supported the Birthday Party on one of their early tours of the UK when they played at Surrey University, and one of my good friends wrote 'Bad Seed: the biography of Nick Cave' (as well as 'The Wild Wild World of The Cramps'). I think you're doing fine - embrace your inner Goth!!

Thank you for this! Safe as Milk is one of my favourite albums ever and I love Frank Zappa so thank you again! I'll be sure to work my way through this list. If you have the time, listen to Cave's album 'Push the Sky Away'. It's less depressing and very beautiful

Oh man it's been a long time since I read Terry Pratchett! Would love to revisit that well. I will check out the Brentford Trilogy next! I don't have too much fantasy on my radar. Are there any others you'd send my way?

Wow! That's amazing. I need to check out that biography too! Push the Sky Away is his best album for me. Did you hear his Live at Alexandra Palace album he released a couple years ago? That's got some great reiterations of his classics.
