My name is Maureen and was diagnosed as a "Type 2 diabetic" at the tender age of 47 and thought my world had ended!

Although new to this support group I have been diabetic since December 2000. I am on Metformin and Gliclazide, and now take statins despite having a Cholesterol level of 4.6 - apparently diabetics need to have a Cholesterol level under 4.0.

How nice it is to have support groups so that we know "we are not alone" and that someone somewhere will have an answer to any question or problem that we may have as an individual, or even a virtual sholder to cry on!

Another site that offers support is the Yahoo! diabetes-uk group (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetes-uk/) which often has very useful advice.

Hi Ikklemo and welcome. I felt the same as you - diagnosed last September at 45. Apparently we need to take statins to protect the heart (so my GP told me) - my cholesterol level is OK too and I take them.

Hi Ikklemo - welcome to the group!

I was put on statins but had some side-effects (mostly nausea), so I stopped them for a while to see if they were the cause and not some other meds. At that point my cholesterol was 2.2. After 6 weeks off the statins my cholesterol was 3.7, which I guess proves they work! I'm now back on them (simvastatin) and don't have any problems -I'll be interested to see what my cholesterol is when I next get tested!
