Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, 55yr young male diagnosed type 2 yesterday afternoon and although I had suspicions it still hit me like a sledgehammer. Been given metformin 1x500mg for a week then 2x and 1 statin a day with a review in 4 weeks. My GP was brilliant and took ages going over things explaining very well (turns out he is diabetic too) and I came away with a huge info pack and he recommended this website to me. He explained our health centre doesn't give out meters to type 2 unless you are given meds that may cause hypo's however he was fine with me getting my own to help with figuring what foods etc cause me spikes and what is ok. I have to exercise too but as I am also riddled with arthritis and asthma I'm fairly limited to what I can do, the main suggestion so far is swimming. I am hoping that with all the help and the wealth of information available I will manage to take control of the diabetes, the drive and determination is there as proven with quitting smoking last july cold turkey from 40 a day to none 🙂
Cheers all
Andy G.

Hi Andy,
A warm welcome to the forum, your GP sounds like a keeper to me.

Hi Andy, Welcome . Well done on quitting smoking.
If you haven't already purchased a glucose meter, many T2s here use he SD Codefree meter available from Amazon or directly from Homehealth
https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/codefree-blood-glucose-monitoring-system-mmoll-or-mgdl/
It has the cheapest testing strips to self fund that we know of and is a perfectly good meter, they all have to comply to the same standards
https://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/codefree-blood-glucose-monitoring-system-mmoll-or-mgdl/
We use the mmol/l measurement in the uk

Welcome, Andy. Good to hear you have a very helpful GP.

Welcome from a fellow newbie. This forum is great!!!

Welcome to the club.... Sounds like you got off to a good start with your GP

Hi Andy
Welcome to the forum .

Welcome Andy. You've come to a great forum for advice, information and encouragement. We've both got similar medication but I held back on the statin because I'm a bit unsure about them. I'll be interested to see how you get on with statins.

Hi Andy. Welcome to the forum. Your GP sounds great - keep hold of him!

Welcome aboard. I know the feeling of being hit by a sledgehammer very well. It does get easier.

Hello and welcome, I like the sound of your doc. 🙂

Welcome to the forum Andy. Hope you're settling into things. Let us know how you're getting on

Thanks all for the welcome 🙂 Not quite a week in and WOW I was not expecting all this, watch what you eat watch what you drink and how often you do it lol, as one dear friend said this diabetes aint for sissies and she is right. The medication is absolute hell when you start it has settled a tad now but for 3-4 days I have been ready to hit folks, my head has been exploding and then when I sit quietly my mind starts wandering and I have been close to tears. Luckily the 1 thing 3 different friends told me would happen hasn't the metformin and the trots maybe because my morphine, pregabalin and dantrolene give me constipation it has equalled things out, however on Saturday my metformin dose doubles :/ Had another round of fasting blood tests this morning but wont get results back until mid next week now with easter hols. Last lot was HbA1c 73 fasting BG10.6 which was up from previous 9.7. My other/better half Jane has been absolutely wonderful through this and I don't know what I would do without her :D Cheers All I'm away for a slap up pilchards on toast dinner hehehe
